Sounds like you are very torn between the 2 schools. If money is not the deciding factor, I would strongly suggest that you visit both schools. I really think that will help with your decision. Both are good schools, but have different strengths and different feels.

My D is at UD and couldn't be happier. If you asked her why she chose UD, she would tell you, "It just felt right for me."

well first off i live in dayton...but i really want to go to miami...but my parents are unwilling...saying that university of dayton is just as good... so can anyone help me out in bringing out valid educational differences...i want to be a doctor but i intend on majoring in international studies where ever i go

Miami claims 92% rate acceptance to Med. school. I do not know how accurate this statement is. First semester Bio is extremely challenging even for very top students weed out class. Do not know about International Studies. Most pre-meds are Zoology major, with 1 or couple minors but any major is possible.

Given the tuition pricing difference I now am more certain of, I don't see any advantage the education at Ud. Looking at as an investment , why pay extra 11k yr for Ud? Why have that extra money spent/borrowed? I'm guessing you'd drive to either school rather than live on campus. Extra gas cost to Oxford wouldn't be that much.
Granted, not everything good/bad about a school occurs in the classroom. Other factors involved in choosing a school besides education cost/value.

You've already made your decision that you want to go to Miami. Why? It doesn't appear to be for the educational differences because you don't know what they are. Do you want to attend because it's campus is more attractive? Because you like the preppy vibe? Maybe your parents see things that we can't. To convince them, you might want to do some meaningful research, rather than ask anonymous people here, many of whom's observations are outdated, e.g., eadad. Miami is no longer the go-to public school in Ohio and it's reputation has suffered recently.

Do your parents want you to commute to Dayton over living at UMiami? I am confused. It appears to me that UMiami is the less pricey option for you since you are in state Ohio.

That is an issue that often occurs here. Lots of kids commuting to Fordham from here over going away to school. Fine way to get a private education at an affordable price. Fordham offers a commuter discount off tuition.

This is not a monetary issue so much as a family issue. In my opinion, there is not such a big difference between the two schools. The issue is whether you will be staying home or going away.

hmm...good point...but still doesn't bring up any valid talking points to my parents...they obviously would rather see me staying at home...don't want me to get distracted...drinking.girls.parties

I toured Dayton yesterday and all I can say is, "Wow!". Students all seemed so happy, even though it was about 5 degrees. The facilities are fabulous. They don't have the natural beauty of Miami, but they need to be commended for a well-planned, cohesive, architecturally-stimulating campus in the middle of a city. The rec center was packed with students. The bulletinboards had tons of weekend activities listed. 90% of students live on campus. If any of you reading this haven't seen the campus, you have to go. If one was out-of-state, planning on a business major, and money wasn't an issue, Dayton would be a hands-down choice. Someone in our info session asked about med school admission rates and the answer was 80%. I would take those figures with a grain of salt. MiamiDAP should be able to give you a long list of reasons why Miami would be better for you. Even though I liked Dayton more than Miami, I think Miami would be better for you, just because of the costs and being able to live away from home.

hmmm...so it's not such much about academics it's about getting away...which is a very valid reason to choose one school over the home town school. In my opinion, living on campus is a natural progression in the maturation process. Hundreds of thousands of kids do it annually, and do it responsibly and successfully. Parties and girls...those are going to happen anyway. Have you tried having the "trust" conversation with the parents? ...maybe trust me at Miami and, if it doesn' work out, I always can transfer to Dayton.

Toledo -- UD was ranked #7 in U.S. News in the category "Schools Where Students are Happiest." It's a very welcoming atmosphere. Still, I understand OP's need to break away.

I do not want to hijack this thread. If any of the Ohio residents reading and/or posting on this thread have information about Hiram, would you kindly send a PM to me? I would appreciate it! I have some questions. Thanks.

Based on a comment from the other parent on the tour, Dayton was a consideration because it was Catholic. That may be another reason OP's parents a pushing it. If so, I'd gather numbers on the non-Catholic students. The only mention of religion was in passing this beautiful chapel. The tour guide said they use it for weddings and that mass is held in a small room in another part of the building. I guess mass isn't real big with the students, which is typical. Find out what Catholic organizations are available at Miami.

Also, Dayton has that same med school agreement with Univ. of Cincinnati. You can get admitted as a freshman, just like Miami.

I did not look at U Dayton, but Miami has a very strong pre-med program. Honors students have an 85% acceptance rate to med school, and the acceptance rate for all Miami applicants regardless of MCAT scores/GPA is 64%. I can't find the acceptance rates for students with MCAT scores > 8 on all sections and a GPA > 3.2-- they've changed the website, and I don't know if that information is still there. The Mallory-Wilson Center is a good resource for Miami's pre-med students; it gives some information about typical class schedules and the premedical advisory committee, which you'll use during your junior year. I thought I was prepared very well for the MCAT, and Miami also helps students find shadowing opportunities.

This is anecdotal but I've heard LOTS of other people say it: It seems like more kids transfer out of Miami than any school around Ohio that I've seen. My son's roommate at Notre Dame his last two years left Miami after a year, and I know of at least a dozen others. I don't know why, but Miami seems to very much be a "fit" school - either you fit or you don't.

For years I've said Dayton is a school that it seems kids just really love. I have no idea why, but they just do. Certainly some kids transfer out, but I have never heard of even one, and I hear kids who go there speak so highly of their experience there. I know a Jewish kid who loves it there. I had never seen the campus and for some reason I didn't think it would be that great, but I just visited it on a tour with my junior son, and we were both very much impressed. It's beautiful, large, open, nice. On tour several groups of kids yelled out how great Dayton was and that he'd love it there. That was the only school where anything like that happened, and it happened a lot, to me. Kids just seemed really happy there.

More school spirit at Dayton, too. They have a great basketball team, in the A-10 league, and I-AA football. Miami is a little more preppy, more reserved in it's enthusiasm for their athletics, in the MAC. Tailgaters at Miami are a little like at a cocktail party and not many folks go to the games. Not sure if there's tailgating at Dayton before football games, but their basketball fans are FANATICS.
