I found out online today that I was deferred at Northeastern University. These are my stats:

College: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Journalism
From: Minneapolis, MN, suburb public high school
GPA: 3.5 UW*
ACT: 30
ECs: Newspaper editor, creator of school newspaper Web site, etc.

I have an eXtreme upward trend. My sophomore year's GPA was 3.0 with no APs (I didn't try at all), then my junior year I took many APs in every subject and finished the year with close to a 3.9 GPA UW. This year, I am taking four more APs as well as honors' and college courses, and first quarter I got a 3.9 GPA.

My letter said that I will just be put in with the regular admissions pool and that they want to see my midterm grades. Everyone I talked to said Northeastern was eXtreme safety for me--what gives? Should I be worried?

Northeastern is trying to move higher in the rankings.

A year ago, a friend of mine with a 3.8 GPA, 1500 on the SAT, 700+ on 4 SAT II, and great recs, and outstanding EC's got waitlisted. He got into BC, UWashington, URochester, BU, UWisconsin, UMichigan, and Lehigh. He was floored.

Two years ago, a friend of mine was defered, then rejected with a 3.6 GPA and a 1280 SAT score...she was unhappy, at least until Emory, Vandy, UTexas, and Tufts came through.

i had 2010 SATS, 730 math, 640 writing, 640 cr
i have like a 89-91 GPA dont really know
i take 4 ap classes
took physics ap, history ap, calc ab ap, etc.etc.
howww?

Thanks for those two posts, it made me feel a bit better. So is it possible that Northeastern is deferring/rejecting people that are *over*qualified?

yea...northeastern must be realll stupid. i really hope other colleges dont follow the trend. i applied to babson, bentley, bu, villanova, bc, and lehigh. i really hope i dont get rejected/deferred from all of them. but u never know i got deferred from ****ing northeastern

Northeastern's quest to move up in USNews rankings is what causes them to sometimes reject/defer qualified applicants. It creates a buzz around the school, making it seem more selective which raises it's USN score and it's percieved prestige.

Yeah, but that's ridiculous. Those students are way over-qualified for Northeastern. I'm sorry your safety went insane. Apply to BU or something, which is a better school anyway and doesn't practice yield-protection.

I got deferred also! Northeastern wasn’t exactly a safety for me, but it was pretty close. I was really surprised. I also got deferred from another college, which was a DEFINITE safety. Im kind of freaking out.
