Why Yale Short Response

Now that we've all submitted, we can discuss.

Remember that one small paragraph we had to write about "Why Yale"? What did you guys write? I'm just curious. There are a lot of bright minds on collegeconfidential, and I want to see who came up with the most creative answer.

I put that I really wanted to explore/study architecture with Professor Thomas H. Beeby because he designed one of my favorite buildings on campus, and some other really specific details on Yale theatre and the community spirit :]
What did you write about?

Mine was quite generic & i’m regretting it. I’m undecided and i kinda had to rush it. I left the Why Yale response last because i thought to myself, “It’s only 500 characters. It’ll only take a few minutes.” And so there i was, 10min. before the deadline, unsatisfied with what i wrote and aware that any response I tried to write would be convoluted and filled with errors. ughhh…ill just have to wait and see if my essays carried me through

Haha are you actually going to post your own response this time?

Here’s mine. It’s not creative, and I never meant for it to be. I just wanted to articulate why I wanted to go to Yale, not show another part of me that was already apparent from the other parts of my application:

I am particularly attracted to the Direct Studies program found at Yale. I realize that the program is intensive, but there seems to be no better way to understand the grand Western canon than to debate the ideas contained within it with some of the brightest students in the world and to be in the presence of such enlightening figures such as Professors Kagan and Pogge. I wish to understand the world and its history, and Directed Studies appears to be the best available means toward that end.

Motion, that’s really cool! I like how straightfoward it is, the tone just makes you sound like you know exactly what you’re doing :]

Lolevertheoptimist. Maybe the poster isn’t even applying for class of 2014 and wanted some ideas if they apply in the future! That’d be sneaky lol. But anyways. It’s fun to hear what other people posted though!

Just a note to everyone, make sure you don’t mind that future applicants jussssst might be searching up “why Yale” posts and seeing what you put.

Haha Demiitasse realize that I joined a year ago with the nickname 19921992, suggesting that I was a 1992 born baby and will thus be part of the Class of 2014 applicants. Unless I had this “sneaky plot” planned from a year ago, its not as complicated as it seems. I’m just curious lol. But, I feel like I’m weaker than most CC members, and so I don’t want to post my paragraphs because it will be a self-esteem bring downer. However, if you are just so “curious” and want to see my paragraph, I’d be glad to PM it to u -_-

Haha I was just joking, no worries! :]

I went the same route as Motion, straightforward and specific to one program! :slight_smile: Here it is:

As an aspiring screenwriter, I want to gain an in-depth understanding of the American society for which and about which I will be writing. I also want to study the effects media has on society so I can make sociologically-informed decisions in my career. American Studies at Yale offers a broad range of fascinating courses and would also allow me to declare a concentration in “visual, audio, literary, and performance cultures”, particularly well-suited for my academic interests and goals.

“Why not attend Yale? You are still the second best school in the nation. If I am rejected from Harvard, I would definitely want to attend. I made an investment of $75, so quit asking me questions!”

Here’s mine - this is how it should have been formatted, but I had to use slashes as line break equivalents (/) to get it to fit…

If I were asked Why Yale?
I’d point to good Nat Hale;
An historic place, never a snore,
The campus has even its own Taft door!

Dining halls and butteries galore,
All 12 colleges I adore;
And ethical ease attainable
With a food project: Sustainable!

In philosophy I seek to excel;
With 32 faculty, Yale would be swell–
And already bridged is a usual gap:
A prof with a link to cog sci – how I clap!

From Directed Studies to the Hardy Society;
To enrich, Yale offers endless variety.

dude that poem was AMAZING and the BEST that I’ve seen. That will definitely make you stand out in admissions

wow.
Elanorci, that is amazing

Elanorci, make sure you post your stats after you’re accepted, so we know you didn’t just get in because of that poem ;)

Not bad elanorci, but, though yours is better than mine, it’s lacking any substance and some of the references there are (at best) arbitrary ones that form no coherent whole (so far as I can tell). Nonetheless, I am in envy of your creativity and poetic skillz :).

I liked it alot back in November… not so sure how I feel about it now but here it is:

When I visited Yale on that cold March day in New Haven, I was hooked. The campus reminded me of Hogwarts, complete with its own version of Harry Potter’s “houses.” Yale is my perfect school, the one I compare all other colleges to. I love everything about Yale, from the cobblestones, to the three-hundred year old traditions, to the rivalry with that school in Cambridge. Whenever my day is particularly draining I just have to think of one word to get me through: Yale.

wow elanorci you’re an amazing poet, but i kind of agere with motion. though that poem definitely shows off your talent, it kind of lists useless facts and doesn’t really show what attracts you to yale

Yale is an intellectual bastion of international relations and economics. Both the unique Ethics, Politics, and Economics major and the Directed Studies program cater to my most passionate interests. Furthermore, I hope to enter the elite program Studies in Grand Strategy, attend Master Teas, and join the Yale International Relations Association. My experiences and connections at Yale would place me in the ideal position to positively change the direction of the world.

…thoughts?

"Recently, I visited my friend (friend’s name), a freshman at Yale. Being a curious prospective student, I asked him many questions. For most, he responded with expected answers, such as “Yale is friendly and has great facilities.” But when someone asked about parties, (friend’s name), who does not drink, informed me that with or without alcohol, black or white, straight or gay, students accept him. Yale impresses me in this respect; peers embrace differences in creed and do not expect you to change who you are.

What do you think? I’m worried this is too risky. How do you think adcomms will feel about me mentioning alcohol?

^OMG. there are tons of schools that are accepting (and are friendly, have great facilities, and great parties). I really don’t think the top academic colleges are the most accepting of differences…
and even if yale students ARE more accepting, you didn’t really show that it’s because of yale (and how) and not because of the people who happen to go there

sorry I sound so critical. you asked for feedback ;)
