Does anyone know anything about the MT program at Wichita State University? We have heard that it is up and coming. It is one of my daughters considerations.

I live in Wichita. My school is actually two blocks west of WSU, so we go there sometimes, but not for theater related things :(

I’m not sure too much of the program. I remember seeing a flyer for a revue they were doing this year. They perform it maybe 6-7 times in a “Black Box Style” theater. That’s not the only theater on campus, however. They have larger theaters for bigger shows, obviously.

Also, Wichita REALLY is known for its arts. There’s sooooo much art here! We have an excellent dinner theatre, the crown uptown, we also have the Mosely Street Melodrama, and last but not least, is Music Theatre of Wichita. MANY people that are in MTW are current MT Students at WSU!

Music Theatre of Wichita is a Broadway-style equity theater. They do about 5 shows each summer, each one is produced in only two weeks. It’s hard work! It is performed in Century II, which has more than 2,000 seats. This theater was home to Wicked when it was in town. Wicked was a HIT when it was here!

My point is, Wichita itself is a very artsy city. I’m really just not so sure about the MT program. Heck, I haven’t even known about it that long! Just request a brochure/more information and see if that’s enough info for your daughter. :]

Thanks christiandrake, my daughter really likes the school and we just wanted some insight from someone else. Thanks for confirming that the arts are big in Wichita. You never know if what the college is telling you is true and. . . it seems to be!
If anyone else has any insight on the MT program let us know.

Also, and this isn’t completely related to college, but to the arts, our high schools are generally well-known throughout the nation for our performing arts programs (choir, band, etc). My high school as well as one other high school in Wichita are known for our theater departments, specifically. (My school is also one of the most “artsy” schools you can find. Artwork EVERYWHERE. Every wall, every ceiling, art. Haha). If your daughter wants to see shows while she’s here, but doesn’t have much money, there’s always some high school show going on. Granted, it’s still high school, but it’s cheap. haha. We have 8 major high schools with theater programs. The ones closest to WSU are actually the ones known for their theater departments!

But anyways, if you have money to see shows and what not, there is plenty of art here! It’s also fairly easy to get around. I’ve been here for about 3 years, and it didn’t take me long to memorize the major roads and what not. Even though I can’t wait to leave here, Wichita really is a great place.

This coming fall/winter, we have Spring Awakening, Spamalot, The Color Purple, and Cirque Do Soleil coming! I’m, super excited!

Forgot to mention that there are several other companies that do shows each year. Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita Grand Opera, and others.

I emailed WSU recently asking what the acceptance rate for the MT program is. Here was the response:

"WSU is a state school with an open admissions policy. Assuming your test scores and GPA are reasonable, you cannot be turned away.

Within the Music Theatre program, we do conduct juries, scholarship admissions, and assessments that are designed to evaluate students talent in voice, acting and dance, and technical progress in all areas. We discuss these assessments with each student so they are aware of any deficiencies. If little progress is made, we may counsel a student to consider another degree. In most cases, students will have already decided that another path may be more congenial."

So basically, your daughter can always attend WSU for MT no matter what.
