I've been working really hard since I started high school ( i'm a junior and have a 4.0 GPA) and this year I started doing the IB program, I've been trying my best to do well in IB chemistry but I don't know what's happening because I keep getting C's. I tried talking to the teacher and it didn't help he was rude and almost made me cry. I've been told by some of my friends that had him last year, that he grades based on how much he likes you.
I know the semester is not over yet and that I can bring my grade up ,but if I do get a C , will I still be able to get into good colleges like
UPenn
Tufts
UCLA ..etc?

Should I drop Chemistry at the end of the semester? ( dropping chem would mean dropping IB)

What should I do? Somebody told me to talk to my counselor but what am I supposed to say? why would they believe me? I'm new at my school and they think he is one of the best teachers they have. I've also heard other counselors talk about him and say that he is like a "college professor"

If you are new in your school, perhaps there are some things you need to shore up your prep for IB Chem.

Talk with your chem teacher and be specific about what questions you have …but first prepare. Look over your work. What are you missing? Calculations? Application? See if you can identify what you are missing. As an IB student preparing for college -you are expected to dig out the stuff and learn alot of it on your own.

Your grade is based on work–tests, quizzes, and so on–
If you are missing calculations, then perhaps meeting with your math teacher and seeing what gap in your calculations (maybe the same small mistake) will help.
If its application–like being able to explain something–then perhaps you need more study.

Depending on your state–you are only in the 1st quarter–so you have plenty of time to bring that C up…

If you are struggling to maintain all of your IB classwork,
meaning if you are not making Bs…then consider if IB is for you.
But dont give up on yourself and chem just yet ;o)
Good luck

Chem can be difficult. My son is struggling as well in honors chem (which at his school is the prep for the AP exam). He had a B, but didn’t do so great on the midterm. Keep working hard and seek out help…maybe another chemistry teacher in your school? Sometimes even your best effort won’t get you the grade you want; not everyone can have an A in everything (well, maybe a select few, but that’s the way the ball bounces).

I had a C in IB chem and a C in higher level math. Got into every school I applied to and got a ton of merit aid. And I wasn’t alone. Develop ec’s; do volunteer work; apply yourself to the course work you already love. Above all, stop beating yourself up over a C.

I also basically skipped a year of college (took 2 summer courses) because of my IB credits.
