Will a drop in your ACT score lower your chances of getting into a top school?

I started off with a 23 (October, junior year), studied my face off and somehow managed to get a 28 October, senior year. Once the December test date came around I wanted to take a stress-free test (hoping the lack of nerves and stress would leave with me some extra points on some of the individual tests), but ended up getting a 26. And of course, my score was sent into the school I have applied to (Umich). Will this have a major impact on my decision, if any impact? (And yes, I understand the part where they look at each application individually, yadda yadda yadda.)

Even though colleges say they consider only the highest score, in your case the 28 will seem more like a fluke. Even though it doesn’t make a TON of difference, but IMHO, lower scores have reduced your chances slightly.

@ISayHelloWorld‌ yikes! Hopefully the rest of my application proves that i am worthy!! thanks for your input.

The majority of accepted students at UM had a GPA of B+ or higher, an SAT score (CR+M+W) above 1700, and an ACT composite score of 24 or higher. You have two ACTs above the 24. Do you live in Michigan?

@HereToHelpYou‌ No, I’m OOS.

The average ACT for out of state is higher. 30. Range 28-32. Send the 28 for sure. The University of Michigan does not superscore an applicant’s test results; they will use the highest composite score from any one test date (regardless of whether or not it was the most recent test taken).

@HereToHelpYou‌ all three scores have been sent automatically. But thanks!

They will consider the 28. Can you take again?

@HereToHelpYou‌ No, I will be getting my decision here sometime soon.
