Will a good college GPA make up for a low high school GPA when transferring?

I am currently a freshman community college student. I never applied myself in high school. Subsequently, my GPA was low for most of my high school career (around 78-81). After a change of attitude, I managed to earn an 88 GPA during the last quarter of my senior year, but my overall GPA was still only a 79.

I've been working hard, and my college GPA is currently an 89. I hope to transfer to a four year school as a sophomore. Would admissions officers overlook my terrible high school grades because of my improvement in college? Or would my low high school GPA still hinder my chances of being accepted into a school? Thanks.

My son did OK in high school and then very well in college and was successful in transferring “up” after his freshman year … in fact, he only had one semester of completed grades (and a mid semester status report) from college when he applied to transfer.

I doubt the transfer schools ignored his high school grades but they seem to have give a lot more weight to his college grades. (PS - he also had board scores which were solid for the school to which he applied to transfer … and retook these while in college and raised his SAT scores about 150 points)

@3togo he retook his SAT’s in college? becaause I want to do this

Most colleges will not look at your HS record (a few may want to see your SAT scores but most won’t). What will matter is your college record over 4 semesters (+ summer if relevant).
With an 89 at a CC (especially if you can bring it to 90 which all schools consider an A-, whereas not all would accept 89 for A-) you can transfer to most 4-year public colleges within your state (with a few exceptions). What State do you live in?
