Will a "W" hurt my chances of transferring?

Hi,

I am currently taking a calculus class that I’m on the verge of failing. I’ve been going to office-hours and tutoring, but I’m still pretty hopeless in this class. I also have a heavy course-load this semester (as well as my internship, service learning and extra-curricular) , so this class is really stressing me out. My GPA is currently a 3.9 and I really don’t want this course to ruin it. I’m planning on transferring to UNC Chapel Hill next fall and I currently attend a CC in North Carolina.

I only have one other W on my transcript (A history course) because the professor was awful, but I ended up retaking it the next semester and getting an ‘A’.

I’m planning on transferring as a Sociology major. I am very nervous about this course ruining my GPA. I only have one more semester (after this current semester) at my CC, and according to the UNC Chapel Hill website it doesn’t even seem that calculus is apart of the course requirements for my major. I know I would need to take a Statistics class at some point, but I believe it would be better to take it once I’m already attending UNC.

Overall, will dropping this course and getting a “W” look bad?

It should not be too bad a problem. Particularly if you get strong grades on your other courses and it is not required for your major.

I don’t think it should be much of a problem either. I was also in a similar situation where I was taking a higher level math course just to prove that I could earn a good grade in a more challenging math course. I had taken a statistics course as well, but I felt that universities would like me better if I had even more math even though it wasn’t required for my major. I applied as a linguistics and sociology majors by the way. 1 or 2 W’s shouldn’t hurt at all

Go for the W over a bad grade in this case.

Thank you!
