Hello, If im interested in becoming an engineer, is taking ap stats of use to me, and will it help me get credit for engineering classes?
It really depends on the school. They all have different requirements. My D took AP stats and is a rising sophomore engineering major. Instead of a full stats class her schools asks that she instead takes a quick 5 week refresher class.
Not too likely. If an engineering major degree program requires statistics, it will probably be a calculus-based statistics course, often a major-specific version. AP statistics is a non-calculus-based course that emulates a college introductory statistics course for math-phobic students who need to fulfill a base level math or quantitative reasoning requirement.
My D’s school accepted stats as a gen ed credit, but not for her stats requirement. She had to take a linear algebra based statistical modeling and probabilities class for her Engineering major.
Eh, generally, no, you won’t really get any useful credit for AP Statistics. But, I’d take AP Statistics anyway if you’ve got the chance (or at least read through a prep book a few times) if you’re interested in knowledge acquisition. You learn some pretty cool stuff earlier than others.
Take it if you’re interested, but only if you’ve completed Calculus already and have no other class you can take (MVC, linear algebra…) OR as an elective.
For engineering, you’ll be taking calculus-based statistics which require a lot more math knwoledge than AP Stats.
