I'm OOS and I've been told that I would be a match if I was in state, but it's a reach for me since I'm OOS. I haven't begun my essays yet since I've been loaded with actual schoolwork, so I was wondering if it would be worth it to really work on my essays and get my app in before the priority deadline.

UW states on their website that submitting earlier does not in any way effect your admissions chance.

However, take a second to think about it. The earlier you turn in all of your information, the earlier they will evaluate you. And because UW admits only a certain percentage of OOS apps a year, it could only help your case by turning everything in ASAP and getting into that small percentile before they reached any “limit”.

It also makes you look eager and tells the admissions staff that you want to go to their college, not just use it as a back-up or something.

Keep in mind that I’m no guru on the subject though. I’m applying in-state this year and can only offer my opinion.

What is your GPA, test scores, and ECs though? We could get a better understanding of your chances and how it might benefit you by applying early if we know this sort of stuff.

From my chance thread

CA resident
Attend a competitive, private Catholic high school that sends most grads to 4 year universities
Might be applying for financial aid as my mom recently lost her job and that was the only source of income (single parent)
First generation? mom went to college for a couple of years but never graduated as she began working full time
Majoring in engineering (still undecided on what specific type, leaning towards aerospace)

Rank: 114/284 (seems pretty bad to me…)
GPA: 3.6 W, 3.3 UW (gr. 9-12)
SAT: 1800 (590CR, 620M, 590W) retook in November, scores come in a few hours actually
SATII: 560 Lit 690 US History
AP/Honors classes: currently taking Lit, Government and Macroecon, took honors English the three previous years and Honors World/Honors US history sophomore/junior year. A’s and B’s in all of them
ECs: Not many, huge weak spot. I’ve played piano for 14 years and guitar for 2. No awards as I was never into playing at competitions. I play both at church sometimes and am helping a few hours each week with the Christmas musical at my elementary school this year. I also play tennis (hopefully for school this year, didn’t make it last year). I’m a member of CSF too.

Oh, and I was born in Seattle and lived there for 7 years, but I doubt that counts lol. UW is definitely my #1 school

Your class rank isn’t very important, but your GPA is relatively low to be honest. The fact that you go to a competitive private school does help though. 3 APs and honors help as well.

Your SATs are solid for UW and exceed the average admission scores from last year. Your ECs are a little weak. I know it’s easier said than done, but try to get some general community service in (homeless shelters, pet shelters, hospital, etc). Join a club too.

In-state you would definitely have a shot at UW, but OOS it will be a bit harder. You should DEFINITELY try to apply as early as possible, but don’t kill yourself to reach that Dec. 1st deadline.

There are a number of even better schools in California too, so don’t just limit yourself to one school.

Oh no, I’m applying to other schools, UW is just my top choice if I get in

Oh, and I got my new SAT scores. Total is 2010 (610/630/770)
