Will bad grade hurt my chances?

Hello,

I had a great transcript for 8th and freshman year. My grades were all 96+, and thus my GPA was a 4.0. I skipped ahead a level of math, also, so I’m in precalc this year.

Adjusting has been extremely difficult. Freshman year was super cushy, so the workload has been absolutely crushing. In addition to that, my algebra skills are shaky, so I have gotten a few bad grades in precalc.

Obviously, it isn’t the end of the world; I have all year to pull up my averages. But, let’s say hypothetically that I finish the year with... an 88 in precalc. Would this hurt my chances of getting in to top schools (e.g. Brown, CMU, Cornell, Middlebury, Swarthmore)?

Thanks in advance!

Bump… :)

Everything bad hurts you; everything good helps you. What matters is the whole package. Just do the best you can–it’s too soon to be obsessing about this, anyway.

Thanks for the reply – I’ll try not to worry so much (for now at least).

Hunt summed it up well. Yes having Bs on your transcript it not ideal, though a couple Bs will not kill your chances. I personally have some and am still planning to apply to one of the schools on your list ED. Calm down and try hard.

Thanks to both of you, this has been very reassuring. (Good luck in your application by the way!)
