Will BC open this fall?

Our daughter is an ED admit for the upcoming freshman class (Class of 2024). She is so excited about the start of school this fall and has already begun to make friends on the BC Class of 24 Instagram account. Is there any anyone on this board who has inside knowledge of which way the BC administration is leaning on this issue? We saw that Northeastern came out earlier this week and announced their intention to open. We live in California and it seems like many schools here have already decided not to open this fall, including the entire Cal State University system. We are hoping BC will be open.

In reality no one knows yet but I doubt these expensive schools will announce so early that their going online. They will have a major deferment if that happens and they cant afford that. I’d expect an announcement by late June early July. I am expecting with my kids to stay online for the fall and even the spring. Cal State schools can afford to announce early as they are so much cheaper. Sad way to start college life

Northeastern has announced its intention to bring students on campus but they made it clear that it will not be campus life as usual.

I’ve read that BC will not decide until June (I believe mid-June). I read this on another thread on CC (Coronavirus and fall college openings or something) and there was a link in one of the comments to a running list of what the colleges’ plans were. BC was listed as decided in June (or mid June). I’m trying to face the reality that my freshman may start college online and perhaps at home. Very sad.

I’m going back in July to move into my apartment. I’m optimistic, but maybe because that’s because I live in Florida and we are on a different curve as it compares to Boston. But maybe all our positive thoughts will make it a reality. See you all in the Fall. BC is the best! You’ll love it. And add to the fall the Marathon and graduation, should be a special time!

Of course, it is their “intention” to open in the fall, but that is also every other private school’s intention. But everyone is also working on Plan B (both in-person and online) and Plan C (all online).

Obviously, they need to wait until the State is open and appears likely to remain open.

So to paraphrase John Bogle, ‘no one knows nothing’.

Tufts announced return on Sept 2nd and return for dental and grad schools early June

Someone posted today on another thread that BC is not allowing any incoming frosh deferrals should they be fully remote learning.

I emailed with admissions yesterday. “We have every desire” to be open in the fall. (of course they do!) " The University has indicated that they are planning to make a final decision on our fall plans sometime within the first two weeks of July." They were very vague about deferrals. “Requests are due by June 1.” . Given the post above, I guess asking for a deferral is a moot point anyway.

What the Prez actually said was that the dental and vet school clinics would open in early June while other research efforts would start to ramp up (undefined dates). Moreover,

In other words, nobody knows nothing.

Mid July now? Ugh. Not really surprised as “Nobody knows nothing”. I know they were previously “charging” $1000 to defer. I don’t doubt they won’t let students defer if they are fully online. My son does not want to defer anyway, but what a sad start to freshman year in college.

@charlie2772 - so he chose BC!?! Congratulations! No doubt starting school on-line will be disappointing. I will have a Fresh and Jr. in college in the fall. Just the thought of paying fall tuition x 2 for on-line is making me crazy! (Although I am a little more hopeful about my S18’s situation.) My D does not want to defer either. I get that. She has been done with classes since the end of April and is currently completing an independent project that all seniors at her school complete during the month on May. She was supposed to be interning at company, instead she is learning how to play an instrument through on-line learning. Besides learning the instrument, she has already taught herself how to crochet and is learning a new language just to keep herself busy (thank you Duolingo!). So she is getting a taste of what a gap year might look like for her if schools are still closed. She is also nervous about sliding back academically. Boston schools are tough to gage. NU is saying they are having kids on campus, Harvard med school is going on-line. There is no way to predict what BC will do.

@xyz123a Yes, he did. A full on 180 from an LAC, but BC won out in the end for academics and its Niche ratings in both Performing Arts and Poli Sci. Plus, he said he’s truly a “Boston guy”. He got a decent scholarship from BC so the money isn’t crazy for us, but it still stings to think of paying thousands for online classes. I fear his opportunities during a gap year would be quite limited during the virus so we’ve agreed it’s better that he’s occupied with classes. Currently, beyond online class he makes tic-toc videos, watched movies and writes film reviews with weekly voice lessons and occasional acting class. We think he needs to move on from that after the summer! I’m not sure how well he’ll do with online college level work, although he was doing APs online this spring. I may or may not be there to “encourage” him depending on whether BC lets anyone back on campus. We were also worried about an academic slide. For him we just couldn’t see a true upside for a gap year. Others yes, S17 no.

@yellowjacket- Whatever Harvard decides, BC will follow…simple as that. Lets hope Harvard opens and stays open.

Could be, but ultimately it’s the call of the Massachusetts governor and Public Health Dept whether MA colleges can bring students on campus.

@Charlie2772 - Like I said, he was in the enviable position of having great choices! It seems like he really thought through his options and made the decision that was best for him - good for him, well done! My daughter loves theater - being in the crew, not on the stage. Maybe they will meet on campus someday ?.

Perhaps I am over simplifying the circumstances and considerations, but seems logical to simply open later, say Nov 1, and push back the spring semester? Why risk opening in late August, only to have to shut down again, if cases spike? That would be very bad and an unacceptable outcome for many.

^^Because the science behind a pandemic says that Wave 2 WILL be coming approximately 6+ months after the first wave. However, did our ‘flatten the curve’ extend that time frame as opposed to Sweden? So all decision-makers have to conjecture what happens when Wave 2 hits during the flu season next winter? Shut down then? Students are relatively healthy, but faculty and support staff have a bunch of co-morbidities. (Too many unknowns. There is no good solution.)

Good news! They just emailed and said expected to be on-campus August 31st! See everyone there

BCBoundmaybe

That is not good news. I was hoping for a delayed opening. A late August opening will surely result in a 2nd campus expulsion IF we get a Covid spike in the fall, which is very possible. I was hoping for a mid Oct fall start date.
