Will chance back! Chance me for Columbia, UChicago, Duke, CMU, Cornell, Northwestern?

Don’t sell yourself short on the EC’s. You’re obviously involved and interested in more than just studying all the time, which is a great thing!

I think with a passionate essay and overall application you’ve got a shot anywhere. But, a few of the schools you applied to are a reach for ANYONE.

Columbia: Low reach.
UChicago: Definitely.
Duke: Reach.
CMU: you betcha
Cornell: I bet you’d get in.
NW: You could do better, in my opinion!

@seashells, Im not totally empty on EC’s, but compared to many other ppl on this site alone, I’m probably not nearly as strong as them. And I appreciate the feedback, but on my school’s scattergram, I’m way higher for duke than for columbia (perhaps cuz my high school is a top school in NC). I wish I had your confidence for UChicago, but they don’t place such a high emphasis on test scores, which sucks for me. anyways, thanks for the feedback, and good luck!

@rapgod, thanks for the feedback, and for future reference, if you want ppl to chance you, try making it easy for us by including a hyperlink

Columbia does not put much emphasis on test scores either. Besides Columbia, UChicago and Carnegie Mellon, I think you have decent chances at all your schools. However, you may be rejected from some or all of them depending on intangible factors. Columbia emphasizes fit and there is no information about that so Columbia is a reach. The essay is important at UChicago so unless you did well on it, it would be hard to say whether you had a chance. I really think Carnegie Mellon will be an uphill battle. You applied for Computer Science yet you don’t seem to be particularly interested in it. CMU will notice this and will probably reject you. If you had applied for Econ or to Tepper, then you would have had much better chances.

Columbia and UChicago RD admit rates will be less than 8%.
Nobody has good chances at Columbia or Chicago.

Good luck to you!

@iwillkillforMIT, well that sucks. i appreciate the honesty in your feedback. I honestly thought I did really well on my essays, could I pm them to you and you tell me what you think? and for CMU, I actually showed a lot of interest in their CS program in my essay, at least I think so. could I pm you my essays? of course, as long as you promise not to spread them online

bump, especially if anybody knows if it hurts my chances at UChicago if 2 people already got into from my school?

Not at all. If anything, that’s a good sign since it means your school must be well received by adcoms. Can’t say the same about my school (2nd to last in the state lol). Anyways, I think you’re a match for most of your schools. Any idea which school you’re leaning towards the most though?

@sternbronco, I really hope you’re right, b/c this is the first time I’ve heard anything like that. I really like Columbia, UChicago, and CMU, especially since they’re urban. As you can tell from my username, I’m a tarheel fan, so I’d rather not go to duke, and they’re too close to home anyways. Cornell and NU are both good, and I’d be happy to get in, but their not in a big city (yes, I know NU is near Chicago, but its not IN chicago), so they’re not my top choices

I think your grades will be enough and although your EC’s might not be where you want them, when it comes down to it you have enough leadership roles and awesome standardized test scores… chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1597246-chance-me-harvard-upenn-princeton-stanford-will-chance-back.html
