I was just wondering if schools, especially ivies, care whether you choose a preset essay topic (options 1-5) on the common app or create your own?

Will they particularly dislike it if you choose the essay topics provided? Do they prefer the creativity of choosing your own topic?

No, as long as it is original and creative. The essay is meant to give colleges a better look at you other than numbers on a page.

Also do NOT write about the depressing, political, or controversial subjects.

My GC recommends that you don’t pick your own topic if you aren’t a strong writer.

Nevertheless, write clearly and simply. Your essay doesn’t need to be this beautiful piece of rhetoric. They need to hear your voice and see what you consider important.

Hi,

It’'s not the topic you choose, it’s the way your write your essay. A boring topic can become gold if you know how to write an essay about it.
