I took the old SAt, got a 1480, but SAT II writing was a 640. Will Duke consider the writing score. Some schools such as MIT wont care about the Writing portion on the NEW Sat because they do not agree wiht how it is 2/3 english-inclined so thus for many minorities, it is a problem. I was wondering in my case, will the disregard the individual "SAT II" writing test. I have other great scores above 700 to offset this low score if not, however, I was wondering about their policy.

Thnks!

Your writing score is important, and it is a required test for Duke and many other universities. It was added to the new SAT because colleges wanted it. Whether you take the new SAT or the Writing SAT II again, I'd do my best to raise that score. Duke will in no way disregard that score any more than they'd disregard your SAT I score.

And did someone tell you MIT doesn't care about the writing section or are you just assuming that because it's a tech school?

Just to add from my experience, I went to Georgetown orientation and they told me specifically that many good colleges opposed the writing section being added to the SATs because it made them 2/3 verbal and put minority students at a further disadvantage. Tehy said they would look at them but their main focus would tsill be on verbal/math and secondary on writing - sort of like how people looked at SAT IIs. That was just what one college told me and one admissions officer - certainly doens't speak for anyone else, just letting you know what I was told.
