The NCAA tournament ends just as the decisions are released. If Duke does well in the Tournament, does it increase yield?

This sort of thing always affects yield. Have you ever heard of Villanova? No one outside of the Philadelphia and New York metro areas knew about it before their tournament win in the 1980s.

This sort of positive advertising does a great deal for the school in terms of admissions, yield, etc.

I agree with hellojan. Go Blue Devils!

Yeah, it's called the "Doug Flutie Factor". If you remember, Doug Flutie threw that Hail Mary that beat Miami (FL) at the end of the game in the 80's. Applicants shot up by 30% the next year at Boston College.

If, say, Duke won the National Title I'm sure their yield would sky rocket as would their applicants for next year.

Who wouldn't want to go to a school that has athletic success?

ACC Champs! Duke 79, Florida State 69.

Well, I love Duke and I hope to go there; but, I could easily end up on the waitlist. If this situation occurs, I would certainly wish for a low yield, and if a bad NCAA performance = a low yield, then I would not mind an underperformance for just one year.

I know this sounds extremely selfish, but I would rather get into Duke then have them win the NCAA tournament :(. If the adcoms were to see this post, they would trash my app on the spot, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I would rather gain an acceptance and have Duke win it all.

But apps to Duke dropped after they won the NCAA title in '91 or '92 so...

Duke's usually in the Final Four. They've now won 8 of the lat 11 ACC tournaments. Winning basketball titles doesn't make much of an impact because it's the norm there.

Winning on the national level DOES impact yield.

It happened at UNC-Chapel Hill when they won the 2005 Men's Basketball National Championship, just when this year's UNC seniors were deciding where to go to college.

Not really. Duke has been in a slump in recent years. Particularly in Hansbrough...err...Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Nah, any boost from b'ball success will be swamped by the economic conditions. Unfortunately, even HYPSM will take a yield hit due to monetary factors -- all of a sudden, that Robertson or Echols or Emory Scholars looks extremely enticing, particularly to upper middle class families (who've seen their "wealth" be decline by half).
