My grades for my classes are currently (for this 4th qtr):
A - Humanities Honors
B - AP Environmental
B - AP Literature
A - Journalism Honors
B - AP Government
F - Pre-Calc Honors
A - Film Honors
3.8 GPA according to current grades, with the F.

I'm extremely afraid that my grade in pre-calc will result in my admission being revoked... It's not senioritis whatsoever, because I've been trying my hardest to end the school year strong, as you can see from my other grades. I just simply don't understand and cannot grasp the material in my math class and I'm very afraid that I will not be able to keep my admission... I received an 83 B last quarter for pre-calc, but it's an F this quarter. Last semester, I had an averaged C.

But I also added to my transcript 75 hours of community service and erased a D, replacing it with a B - since FSU last saw my transcript.

What should I do? I'm freaking out :( Please help, thank you very much.

They might, but I’ve heard that they rarely do it unless you have more than one D/F or if you failed to pass a course necessary to enter college. It’s better to call and talk directly to an admissions officer (don’t forget to mention your 75 hours and D –> B change). They’re really nice until you get to the financial aid department.

So instead of talking to the FSU admissions office student reps, I can ask to speak directly to an admission’s officer? (Thank you for your answers)

Yea, phone and talk to an admission officer Monday and ask what you can do and what they expect; get it on your FSU file that you phoned in about your concern with math and that you are still keen on attending FSU and are working to get math grade up. They might tell you not to worry about one poor grade. But, they might not guarantee you anything for sure, so I’d still keep studying math this weekend and every possible minute the next couple of weeks until finals. Get with your math instructor Monday at school and remind him/her how important a C grade is for semester and ask what you can do to earn a C grade. Ask if you can get extra credit, if you can retake any past exams, go to any math tutoring offered at your school, find a math whiz to study with. FSU will only be concerned with semester grade, not quarter grade. If you got a B for first quarter you can still salvage a C for semester if you put a hard push on the next couple of weeks and do ok on your final exam. I know this a tough spot to be in, but you can do it with some effort and some help. Good luck!

Definitely call FSU admissions - I did, because I’m not doing well in AP Calc and I’m worried I could end up with a D this semester. I’m doing fine in all my other courses. They told me it shouldn’t be a problem if it’s only the one class, as long as my other classes haven’t taken a downward turn; less than a C. I also emailed admissions because I wanted something in writing, and essentially received an email stating same.

Additionally, I talked to my AP Calc teacher because I’ve been going to tutoring and doing whatever possible to get a C. I even told him I’m concerned that if I get a D FSU would rescind my acceptance, he knows I’m trying and told me this quarter depends more on homework, so I should be fine. You might want to talk to the teacher too and see if there’s anything that might help you pull out a D in the 11th hour…

In the last few years they have revoked for a D or F. But if you are PROACTIVE and call and explain, and if you can get it up for the semester grade, you may be OK based on the rest of your grades. If you do nothing and just wait and see, you will have a problem. Call Monday. Quarter grades may not be on the final transcript, BUT SEMESTER GRADES ARE. So if you have an F for one quarter, you might end up with a D for the semester and that you need to call and discuss and explain.

I know you don’t want to call. But better to call and be honest than not call and get a rescinded admission. If you call and the grade that shows up on the transcript was a C after all, there is nothing lost. You never meet or see your admission counselor again. The call is not part of your record. No one knows. Really. Call. You can even call and tell them you would like to discuss your situation first and identify yourself later. Present the scenario and go from there. You have a strong schedule.

What ever you do, do not try to test out of College Algebra. And even if you have Math SAT scores that says you don’t have to take it, take it anyway. You need 2 math course at FSU, and you will need college algebra at FSU to be successful at higher level math. Sometimes you will get notice that based on your score you don’t get credit but you don’t have to take it. That means you have to start with the NEXT LEVEL and still get two courses for 6 hours. Better to decline the pass and just take the course. And if you are starting summer, do not try to take a math class in 6 weeks. No summer math. Wait till fall or spring.

I suspect this is a temporary bump in the road. Hang in there. It will work out if you work hard this last month in school. Talk to your HS math teacher also. Get tutoring. You can do this.

sunnyflorida–do you recommend taking college algebra even if someone is getting Bs in calc AB? my son, who wants to major in accounting, got the 3 credits for college algebra because of his SAT score. He’s hoping to pass the AP test for calculus. Would you still suggest he take college algebra course?

thank you, everyone. I emailed the admissions office and they should be getting back to me Monday morning. I’ll be working my butt off to get at LEAST a D for the semester, and I’ll be talking to my teacher Monday morning for help.

The thing is, I’m attending for Summer session of 2010 which starts June 28th (and i’m moving in June 23rd), and they’ll get my final transcript past June 9th… do you think they’ll be able to rescind my acceptance within 2 weeks? That’d be so cruel haha. I’m just hoping for the best and I’m gonna try to get my other grades up even more.

I think I read where it was an FSU student who was rescinded in June 2009 - but I believe they had 2 D’s (I remember one was in AP Calc because that’s what I’m worried about) - I think they got notified about June 10th-ish. You should be able to find that thread.

Do whatever you can. I’m trying to pull out a C and at this point, I’m not above begging for a sympathy grade from my AP Calc teacher. I just had the most difficult time in AP Calc, I didn’t get it - and I got an A in my pre-Calc honors class last year…go figure.

wtztu, I think your son is FINE taking the credit. I was really trying to help the OP not to get in over her head if she is struggling with HS math. If your son is talkng AP calc and gets a 3 or better on the AP exam, he will be fine taking the credit for BOTH college algebra (SAT scores) and Calc (AP score). He then will have 6 hours of math credit and can just focus on the classes he needs for his major.
