will getting a letter from.....

will getting a letter of recommendation from a Cornell alumnus do anything to your chances of admission.....i would think it would help

not really, unless you did substantial and legitimate work with the alum and aren't just a family friend or something

nope........

how about a letter from a Cornell Professor?

maybe a tiny little bit, if they are well known and know you very well. even so, just a little bit

I'm at Cornell and one of my high school teachers who knew me very well, and liked me, wrote my rec. He happens to also be a Cornell alum and also worked on the admissions committee many years ago. I wonder if that helped me get in.
Prolly did

anh maybe it helped because he was your teacher who knew you well and like you. then they were like oh hah he went to cornell too what a nice letter. definitely an afterthought though.

hmm..I don't think my Cornell summer professor knew me as well as a few of my other teachers, but he asked me if he could write a rec for me.

...hope I did the right thing to accept his generous offer?

doctorjohndorian: nope, it probably won't help you.

bump
10 char

well if he worked on the amdissions comitee before..maybe there's a string he could pull ofr your acceptance.. lol... j/k... possibly joking or not

I already have 2 teachers who wrote me recs, but then I asked another teacher, who is also a Cornell alum, to write a rec as well (as an alum). I will definitely use the first 2 recs, because one is really great, and the second teacher is mailing the rec directly. So is it bad to have a rec from a 3rd teacher who is also an alum? (I have a letter of rec from my job as well) Any thoughts?? Is it too much?

And the reason that I didn't ask the alum for the rec first is because I knew the first 2 would be very good (math and english) and I really needed a good English rec because even though I can do very well in english class, I can't do well in english standardized tests (time issues!). The third rec is from a physics teacher (alum).

i think as long as the person who write you a recommendation really knows about and can write really about you as well...then you will be fine!!
