Will he be accepted?

My S has a 3.352 unweighted GPA and 24 ACT. He is a 4 year golfer with league and district awards, 4-H camp counselor, NHS, FFA, works part time. He has always wanted to go to Ohio State University, main campus. Is it even possible? They won't give us a definite GPA or ACT to go by.

Look at **************.com or google Ohio state admitted students SAT scores. If he did not take the SAT than just do the conversion for the ACT to SAT. You will be able to see where he stands in the applicant pool.
I don’t know if Ohio state has a golf team but that may be a hook for him (I don’t know much about golf so I am not familar with the awards he has won). You have not mentioned anything about the rigor of his courses, has he taken any AP’s and if so what were his scores? What about SAT subject test?

mom1, why worry? Looks like he’s very competitive based on the CDS: [Ohio State University - Office of Enrollment Management - Common Data Elements: C. First-Time, First-Year (Freshman) Admission](http://oem.osu.edu/docs/OSUcds9900_C.htm). Look at the ACT section.

Sorry, I see that I am unable to post the name of the site so just google Ohio State admitted students SAT scores. The information is there.

concernedmom.

His grades / scores seem a little low from what I have seen in recent OSU admissions. However, I know some similar students who did a bit of an end run by applying for summer quarter rather than fall quarter, and they were accepted.

I notice this information is for 1999. I have heard that their ACT requirements have been going up over the last few years. Is this same information available more recent?

How does that work? Someone told me something about this. Would he still apply by 12-1 but just apply for summer? If so, could he just take one summer class? Then does that automatically get him accepted for fall?

Agree with boysx3 recommendation to mark summer term, too. S1 was not that strong but wanted to go to PSU more than anything, main campus only. So he marked that he would go to the summer session and that is how he got accepted. It turned out to be a good thing, it gave him time to get the college routine under his belt before the madness of fall term at a large university.

Cross posted - For S1, he just marked the box that said he could start in summer. He took about 2-3 classes over a couple of sessions. Summer was done differently. He got a couple of basic classes out of the way without being in the huge lecture classes. He was a registered student. He simply registered for his fall classes and continued his education. There is just one acceptance. Once you are in you are there.

here’s the new one: http://oaa.osu.edu/irp/publisher_surveys/09ColumbusCDS.pdf

Thanks so much for the info.

In state: yes
Out of State with no need of financial aid: yes
Out of State and you need lots of money: maybe.

That’s what I understand…once he is accepted he could talk to his new academic advisor find out how many hours he would need to take summer quarter. Once you’re in, you’re in…and you just enroll for your fall quarter classes.

It might not be a bad idea to dip toes in college waters over the summer–OSU can be overwhelming to a lot of new students, it’s so big and impersonal. And the adjustment to college level classes might be a bit easier in the summer…I’ve heard the classes are a bit less rigorous and class sizes a bit smaller as well.

while I certainly hope your DS gets accepted to the school that he desires. However, is he also applying to some other schools - just in case?

BTW…can you pay “full-freight” or do you need FA?

Our daughter is senior in college now, and we were never able to get FA. Said we make too much - lol. So I’m sure we will have the full freight to pay for him too.

Yes, he will apply to another state school that isn’t competitive. We are also still looking. He just wants OSU.

Probably stupid question but he really needs to work a lot this summer to have money for next year. Therefore, summer classes would only be if that was the only way he could get in. There is no way to know – in other words if he applies for fall and doesn’t get in — then it’s too late to try the summer quarter approach, right?

I discouraged my son from going to a school I thought might be academically challenging for him. I didn’t get anyway. The academics have indeed, been challenging. I know that sometimes he wishes he’d listened to me.

I don’t mean to be discouraging. By all means, if OSU is what he wants and he can be admitted, he should go for it. But remind him that a more difficult, selective admissions process may signal more academic rigor and a steeper grading curve.

From what I have heard it is easier to transfer into Ohio State than to be admitted as a Freshman. I heard from friends that no one last year got in with less than a W3.75 at our very competitive high school that accepts many to OSU. Admissions have become very competitive.

What I recommend is that he applies to the satellite campus at Newark. They have dorms and if you complete a year there, then he could transfer to main campus fairly easily.
