I failed Pre-calculus, and I'm planning on taking AP stats. Do you think I will be able to do well in AP stats? I heard its a different type of math.

No. If you fail precal you fail everything.

AP Stats only goes up to Algebra 2 math wise. Lots of writing though. What my Pre-calc teacher said was take stats if your aiming for majoring in liberal arts, math and science majors should take calc. So basically if your a good writer and did good in algebra 2 you should be fine.

Alright, that’s perfect. Thanks Jackyt.

Wait, should I take AP Stats or re-take Precalculus in my senior year? I failed it second semester, and got a C first semester. AP stats is a higher level than precalculus since its “AP” so wouldn’t the colleges like that I’m “challenging” myself? What should I do?

If you jump from failing pre-calculus to doing well in AP stats, it will show colleges that A) you don’t suck at math and B) you have the persistence to do well in math, even after not doing well the year before.

If I were you, I would take both pre-calc and AP stats (if your school allows you to).

I would try to do both. I know it seems like a lot of math but stats isn’t really that much math and precalc would be much easier the second time through. If it doesn’t if you schedule it up to you them.

Alright. But just wondering, if I absolutely had to pick one course, which should I take? Re-take pre-calculus or AP Stats?

Also, I’m a bit wary about taking AP stats and pre-calculus at the same time… I’m taking almost all AP classes, so I’m afraid I’ll struggle.

By the way, do you reccommend me to take SAT subject math level 1 or 2, considering how poorly I did in Pre-calculus second semester?

I’ve been told AP stats isn’t too bad compared to other APs depends on your school though. Ummm I would go ahead and take stats, but i would talk to a counselor when school starts and ask them what would be best.

Don’t take precalc again unless you know you can get an A the second time around. Taking it twice and doing badly twice is NOT going to look good.

Or how about not taking anything at all because
if you fail at precal then most likely you will fail at
everything else.

What if I get a B the second time around? Am I better off not taking it? How about if I get a C?

The kids in my school simultaneously take precalculus and AP stat at the same time. Coming from my school, which is obsessed with disallowing students if they haven’t had necessary experience for a particular class, it does not seem like precalculus is as big a deal or a prerequisite for AP Stat.

As harsh and brunt as this is, I agree.

And to answer the OP’s question, pre-calculus is seldom required in statistics. However, pre-calculus is of comparable difficulty (a little harder, in my opinion) with statistics. If you failed pre-calculus, you will probably not do much better in statistics.

AP Stats is way easier than pre-cal. I was normally good at math but I stuggled in Pre-cal. Stats is a different type of math and you use a calculator a lot and do a lot of writing. Sometimes it just requires you to be creative and a convincing writer.

Maybe that’s how I pulled out a 5 >_>

I took AP Stats a year before I even took Pre-Calc. I’m not a “math” kind of person, and AP Stats was by far the easiest and most interesting math class I’ve ever taken. The connections to the real world are much more direct and easier to understand than in the traditional HS math classes.

That being said, I would be a little bit wary of taking an AP math class having failed Pre-Calc. I hope it was more of a didn’t-try-at-all-because-it-was-so-boring issue than an I-suck-at-math-and-didn’t-understand-it-to-save-my-life issue.
