<p>I'm currently a soph, and I'm taking Algebra 2 Honors this year. Next year I'll be taking PreCalc Honors and the year after AP Calculus.</p>
<p>It seems as if a lot of people take PreCalc as sophomores, AP Calc as juniors, and then AP Stats as seniors. Will I be at a disadvantage for being a year behind? Two jr. high schools send their kids to my high school. One of the jr. high schools did not have an accelerated math program in which students can be one year ahead, so I'm not able to take AP Stats. The other school did have it, so there are some kids in my grade who WILL be taking AP Stats senior year. </p>
<p>My question is will this hurt me when it comes to college apps?</p>
<p>No is the short answer. AP Stats might help you but I would really really doubt that not taking it would hurt you.</p>
<p>Though at least at my school, you can take AP Stats concurrently with any math class after Algebra II - stats doesn't really require super upper math skills; it's kind of funky like that. Most of the kids in stats (again, this is at my school) don't consider stats real mathematics... it kind of falls into its own category.</p>
<p>This is mostly true only on CollegeConfidential. CollegeConfidential, if you haven't noticed, is full of overachievers. The AIG kids in my county follow this sequence:</p>
<p>8th Grade - Algebra I
9th Grade - Geometry [Honors]
10th Grade - Algebra II [Honors]
11th Grade - Precalculus [Honors]
12th Grade - AP Calculus AB</p>
<p>This is the most regular form of taking a math sequence for your normal AIG/honors student.</p>
<p>haha I actually asked my counselor the exact same thing. He told me that if you need stats most colleges actually have a specific stats class relating to your major. In my opinion, since that class would be a lot more specific you might not be able to get out of it by taking ap stats. I think you taking ap cal will look great, and stats is seen as one of the "softer" ap's.</p>
<p>(I almost didn't see you Sligh, how's Pre-cal? My grade is approaching a 99 at this point... yay curving! Did you see next year that NCVPS is only offering year-long standard Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II?)</p>
<p>In my county AIG Students do the follwoing:</p>
<p>8th grade- Algebra I
9th grade- Geometry (Honors) & Algebra II (Honors)
10th grade-Pre-calculus (Honors)
11th grade- AP Calculus AB
12th grade- AP Stats </p>
<p>As for me, vying for the title of "typical CCer" my plan:
8th Grade: Algebra I
Summer: Geometry 8 weeks online
9th Grade: Algebra II online*, Pre-calculus Honors online
10th grade: AP Calculus BC online
11th Multivariable calculus and diff equations^
12th: ??? ^</p>

<li>In choosing schools, I had to make a choice between going slower, and taking non-honors math courses. I think being in 10th grade in AP Calculus BC with standard algebra II, looks a lot better than in 10th grade in Pre-calculus honors like every other smart kid... getting ready to take AP Calc AB the next year with honors algebra II. My online provider doesn't offer honors math below pre-cal.

<p>It, of course, depends on your placement inside your school. Only take stats if you'll do well. I just learned it isn't being offered to me next year.</p>
<p>lucky u guys! i moved to US in 9th grade so i had to start taking algebra I in 9th grade....but currently im taking AP Stats and Precal Honors...and im a senior...i love math!! Im hoping to pass my Stat AP exam w/ a 5, but we'll see what happens...</p>
<p>Hey you 08'ers, why are you all in my online pre-cal class and failing? j/k But seriously, how hard is/was everyone's pre-cal class? (I know sligh's is evil) I'm the one freshman in my Pre-cal class, there's one Sophomore, three Juniors, and 19 Seniors.... the Sophomore and I (the freshman) are near a 100--- 44 points above the class average.</p>
<p>im not failing...i have a 100 in my class right now...lol...the only reason im in precal as a senior is b/c i moved to US in 9th grade (w/out knowing english)...i would be done w/ calc also if i was here in middle school or something...im not "dumb" like other seniors in my class...lol</p>

8th - Algebra I Honors
9th - Geometry Honors
10th - Algebra II Honors
11th - Precalc Honors (teacher sucked, got a C+, decided I hated math)
12th - AP Stat</p>
<p>My guidance counselor said I'd be at a disadvatage for not taking calculus, but it doesn't appear to have hurt my admissions profile at all, judging from my acceptances so far. Granted, I'm not an engineering or science person, but for prospective humanites or social studies majors they don't care so much about what specific math classes you took as long as you made sure to challenge yourself.</p>

<p>I'm in precalc as a senior. That said, it is the normal progression, there are a lot of people ahead. I'm not good at math, then again who cares. Math isn't for everyone, I doubt it will hurt you.</p>
<p>You're not behind, you're normal. I had to take summer calc at a university in order to be able to take AP Stats (best decision ever even though it sucked while doing it). Maybe drop another course you don't like and take 2 maths, that's what a lot of kids do and say that they're interested in pursuing math in college.</p>
<p>well, im not taking online classes...online classes seems challenging but idk, i've never tried...i still haven't learned much about american educational system...lol</p>

<p>Otherwise, do you think a person with a solid backgrund in probability/counting and is good at algebra/graphs can learn it by themselves and get a 5?</p>
