In November, I applied to NYU Stern as my first choice. However, while Stern is my top school, they still gave me the option to apply to a different school. I chose CAS as my alternate school if I were to get denied by Stern. I love NYU more than any other school in particular. I’m just nervous that I should have applied to CAS as my first choice. Is it anyway possible that they would still consider me for CAS if I am rejected at Stern? Here are my stats
GPA: 4.5 (weighted) and 4.0 (weighted)
ACT: 30
SAT: Didn’t take it
Essays: I would say my common app easy is the better of the two, but my Why NYU essay is still very unique. I’m really proud of both of them.
Extracurriculars: I’m very involved and hold around 5 officer positions.
I’ve seen conflicting answers on cc threads. Some say they won’t consider me for CAS, and others say there is chance. Could somebody tell me what the real answer is? Thank you so much.
On NYU’s admissions blog, they wrote a post saying that they do consider applicants for their alternate schools but they actually wrote that they rarely consider alternate schools for Stern applicants, especially CAS. They only seem to place Stern applicants in Stern or SPS. If you look through past threads, you will notice that people don’t usually get placed into any alternate schools they listed other than LSP (LSP placement is very frequent) so even though NYU says they do consider applicants’ alternate schools of interest, it appears to be rare to be placed into an alternate school unless you listed LSP as your second choice.
Yeah, that’s what I was afraid to hear. I really should have applied to CAS considering the fact that I’m now second guessing my major…Does anyone know the process of transferring to another college at a university? Can it be done easily at the start of your freshmen year?
D has a similar concern. She is actually wondering if she might be able to switch her preferences and have her alternate choice be listed as her first choice if she calls or sends an email to admissions requesting it. Does anyone have any experience with this?
I don’t know about changing preferences on the application, but I know that internal transfers to Steinhardt and CAS are fairly painless and totally possible (except for some majors in Steinhardt that require auditions or portfolios). Transfers to Tisch and Stern are significantly harder. @Zotero99 I don’t know if you can transfer immediately at the beginning, but if you talk to your advisor they can tell you which classes to take so you can transfer by the end of Freshman year.
