I’ve reached this point where it’s 12 am and I’m stressed and near tears for maybe the 20th time this year. I really want to get into Georgia tech for international relations. I have a 1420 SAT 730 in English 690 in math, my sat math score is low and it’s making me nervous. I’m in IB diploma and I’m ranked 8 in my class out of 700. I have a 4.0 GPA weighted and unweighted (my school is weird it only goes to 4.0) My grade average, not gpa, is a 101.5. I’ve been to two leadership summits over the summer, one was for 2 weeks one was for 6 weeks, a year long program which I was selected to partake in from a competitive pool of teens where I was taught how to advocate for Israel and was eventually selected to speak to the US diplomat from Ireland. I was president of Jewish heritage and community service in an international Jewish youth organization, I am proficient in 3 languages - English, Spanish, and Hebrew. I am a hispanic female and in state. I’m also only in IB math SL and I took honors physics last year instead of AP which Also makes me nervous. But I took biology and chemistry freshman year and AP bio sophomore year where I got the award for highest grade in AP Bio. I also have been on varsity tennis for four years and have travelled to 31 different countries and wrote in my personal essay how I have a passion for bridging the gap between cultures through learning languages and traveling and that this love stemmed from my own background as a Jewish and Hispanic girl. What do y’all think? Am I GT material?
I think you have a great chance at getting in! You’re in state and have good academics and extracurriculars. Your SAT Math is still within their middle 50% range, but on the lower end. You’re also applying for IR which not their most popular major. You also have a diverse background and experience in your intended field so they will like that. I think you have a good chance! (This is coming from someone in a family that goes to mostly GA public schools)
While GTech is an absolutely amazing school, it may not be the best place for you for International Relations. U Georgia is an excellent college and has a better program in international relations than GTech.
However, while your SATs are relatively low for GTech, they are still in the mid 50% range. Since your GPA is high, your overall profile is good, and you are instate (acceptance rate for in state last year was 37.7%, 39.6% for EA), I would consider that you have good chance of being accepted. They also write that, while you aren’t admitted directly to your major, they consider your chosen major when looking at your application. So your math SAT, which is on the lower end of the mid-50%, will likely not have the negative effect that it would have had you been stating that you would like to be a STEM or business major.
Another thing that works for you is that, on their CDS, they state that GPAs and ECs are “very Important”, while standardized tests are “important”.
Take a look at your high school’s Naviance, and see how many applicants with your stats were accepted to GTech. that should give you a rough estimate of your chances.
What other colleges are you looking at? George Washington University is one of the best schools for international relations, and it’s test optional, as is American University, another excellent choice for international relations. U Georgia is actually pretty good for international relations, and it’s Public Affairs program is one of the best.
It’s not healthy to be so attached to one school. It’s only early November, so this seems to be a something that happens a couple times per week. Don’t focus on a Dream School. Build a list of affordable colleges that will help you meet your career goals. Where else are you applying? What do you like about those schools?
I’m applying to American, I also am very interested in UVA but I want the instate tuition and a large urban school.
I also have no interest in UGA, like really do not want to go there.

I don’t know if you will get in to Ga Tech, but wanted to offer words of encouragement. You clearly have worked hard in high school, and I also think speaking 3 languages and being a URM will add a positive dimension to your apps.
Besides American, are you applying to other schools? Is there an affordable safety on your list? Have you considered Tufts?

Right now, your chances stand at under 50%. It’s as good a shot as anyone, but It’s a tough school to get into. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. GA has a lot of great schools.
