Will I Get into BU CAS?

<p>Hi, everyone! =) This is another one of those “chance me” threads. I will be applying for the class of 2016. If it makes any difference, I’d like to major in mathematics.</p>

<p>GPA:
Unweighted: 3.496 (9.4894/11)</p>

<p>Weighted: 3.6241 (9.8723/11) → 11-point scale weights are much weaker than 4-point scale weights.
There is a clear upward trend from freshman year</p>

<p>Rank: 32/246</p>

<p>Percent Rank: Top 13.008%</p>

<p>Course Rigor:
I’m from a pretty rural town in the mid-west (35,000 people), so my high school doesn’t offer an abundance of honors or AP classes (and, wth is IB? ha ha). I didn’t take any honors courses freshman year, but there were only two available (Honors English I and Honors Geometry). Looking back, that was a huge mistake. Additionally, because my school is smaller, weighted classes are often only offered at one time and taught by one teacher. This causes scheduling problems, and this will cause problems for me particularly next year when two different AP classes are inevitably scheduled to be taught during the same hour.</p>

<p>I have plans of taking the ACT again in September–the prep book is actually open in front of me as I write this.</p>

<p>ECs:
I started working in the middle of the first semester of my freshman year at a local fast-food restaurant. I have progressively been given more hours (same job), where I was eventually working 30 hour weeks toward the end of April and May of this year.</p>

<p>Music: District Honor Orchestra [Violinist] 8th, 9th, 10th grade years (chose not to participate 11th grade year). I have gone to state 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years earning 3 II’s, and 1 III. (I being phenomenal, V being very poor.) These scores are very subjective, as they were judged by one individual in one setting. Private lessons from 6th grade year to the summer going into my junior year. I also had a paid position helping younger players in a group setting every Saturday my summer going into my junior year</p>

<p>Volunteer: Over 420 hours at a local hospital working directly with patients–this is a cumulative statistic from the past summers. I also performed violin pieces regularly for the orthopedic rehabilitation patients during portions of the summer. Those old ladies are so cute. =)</p>

<p>School: Representative of Spanish Club and I’m a member of NHS. </p>

<p>Religious/Community: Musician and Cook for Celebrate Recovery, an organization to help struggling drug addicts resolve their addictions. This is ran through our local church. Services were/are every Friday night, 5:45pm to 9:45 (church service and meal is served). I started this the beginning of my Sophomore year, and resigned this May.</p>

<p>I feel like I am listing things others might deem as obsolete, but a 25-30hr/week work schedule doesn’t leave much room for other co-curriculars. Working wasn’t/isn’t optional</p>

<p>I’d say you very high chance of getting in to guaranteed spot. Those stats seem to be spot on with most CAS students I have met at BU. Decent amount of EC to tie up with it as well.</p>
