Clemson is one of my dream schools.
Class rank: school doesn't do that anymore
gpa: 3.3/4
ACT: 31
very involved: played lacrosse, head of 2 clubs, huge involvement in my church
School is one of the best in the nation (idk if this helps)

GPA is a little low but ACT score is pretty good - you’ve definitely got a shot, keep those grades up!

Absolutely with that ACT and GPA combination. My son was accepted with a $10k merit award (oos) with a 3.1/4 and 2100 SAT which is probably equivalent to your ACT.

^with a 3.1 GPA? I’m guessing your son went to a pretty reputable high school? (no offense, just curious)

I to am a bit suprised a 3.1 would get that, but congratulations nonetheless! It must be a very rigorous school for a 3.1 to be a good GPA!

JM2817, and my daughter has almost that exact combination at a super-competitive high school (ranked by Newsweek) with a bunch of APs, Girl Scout Gold Award, and a prestigious summer internship in the subject area she plans to study, and hasn’t heard a peep yet. Weird. There was a thick envelope in our mailbox today, and we got so excited, but it was from our insurance company:( When did you hear?

But I think my daughter will get IN (At least, Cappex does, and they don’t know about her ECs), and I think you will too, cmcdade (Is Dade Miami-Dade County, by any chance?).

HI, I have been reading many of your post and responses. My son is an out of state applicant to Clemson. His Gpa is only a 3.25 and Sat’s are 1480. He has many XC activities and ALOT of community service. We visited Clemson in October, we spent 2 days there, attended the VT game and we Rocked the John for the Basketball Pep Rally. Needless to say we had a blast! My question to you is, how much does a reccomendation letter from an alumni mean on admission decisions? My sons uncle is the alumni and wrote a rec. on my sons behalf.

Great HS and the 3.1 was unweighted. He has many APs and all others honors classes so I am sure his weighted was calculated much higher by Clemson.

Yes, JM2817, I assumed that was unweighted. My daughter’s also (also the many APs and all others honors – the only nonacademic classes she’s taken were required PE and required fine art, drama for one semester. She has taken 8 science classes in 4 years). Her weighted is much higher. If she received ANY merit aid, I’d send her there but, as it is, she’s been offered a scholarship to University of Arizona, where I DON’T want her to go, but she wants to go because of their agricultural program (So she can learn about agriculture in a place with no rain;)). She’d go to Clemson’s agricultural program if she gets in with at least some money or UF’s if she gets in period (We’re in Florida, but UF has become crazy-competitive). Maybe today . . . .

We just heard last week so I assume you should hear soon. We are headed to look at Alabama and Georgia this week. Received great merit aid from Bama. Still waiting to hear from UGA.

Ah jim2817 that makes a lot more sense, I also had a 3.1 GPA in high school (3.8 unweighted) but got a 34 on the ACT and went to a (then) US News #100 high school so I was lucky and got in. I know many people who had higher GPA’s but didn’t get in so my high school and test scores definitely helped me out.

Laxboy94, I know that Clemson’s admissions office definitely takes alumni relationships into account when making the decision. Now I’m not sure how much impact this will get since it is coming from an uncle as opposed to coming directly from his parents but I’m sure they’ll read over it and consider it. Glad you had fun at the VT game and Rock The John! Hope he gets that acceptance letter soon.

Do you think they give points for high school ranking? Daughter’s hs is #69 in the US (coincidentally close to Clemsons ranking as a college). We’re hoping it helps. Otherwise it would make more sense to go to an easier school. Our county actually recently eliminated valedictorians due to just that type of school shopping.

What do you mean points for high school ranking? I know it is definitely a factor in the admissions process but a bad class rank won’t hurt you if you make up for it in other areas (test scores, course difficulty, GPA etc…)

No, I meant do they consider the difficulty of the particular school? 69 was the rank of the school in the nation, not my daughter in the class.

I would think if they see she is at a hard school with a good rank it definitly helps. How much I can’t say but I’m sure it does.

I know the admissions office takes into account small schools. For example, my son has 11 people in his senior class at a private school. I was told by admissions that they have one admissions counselor responsible for those applicants because that person is familiar with the curriculum of those schools and how competitive they are. I was told by more than one person in the office that they take into account that when looking at the top 10 percent in his class, that’s one person. I would think the admissions counselors would be familiar with other very competitive schools as well.

I think it definitely has a factor, I don’t think I would be admitted to Clemson with a 3.1 GPA if I was at a not as well regarded high school or without the AP classes that I took
