Hi guys,
I’m currently a junior and I was wondering what my chances are of getting into Notre Dame. I am the youngest of 5 kids and they have all attended, as well as my parents. I also have had 2 cousins and a whole slew of aunts and uncles. I am in 3 APs at the moment but I am considering dropping AP English because the teacher is new and has assured no one will get above a mid B. That got me nervous because AP English junior year is a notoriously easy A class as far as APs go. I was wondering if that will hurt me too bad because ill have 5 APs by the time I graduate regardless if I take it or not. My GPA weighted is around 100 give or take a few tenths. I am involved at my church as an usher and I volunteer about 30-40 hours a year at the YMCA and a handicapped sports association. I will be a 3-sport varsity captain and I already have 2 state championships with more likely to come. I am also the president of our school’s campus ministry group and I’m on the math team and we have also won states 2 years in a row. I haven’t got my SATs back yet but I know I got almost if not all of the math right through checking online (I didn’t find any I missed but I’m sure I made a dumb mistake). So if I have above a 750 on math, 670-710 on reading, will I have a good chance? I know Notre Dame doesn’t really look at writing but thats about the same as reading for me. I might not have gotten those scores this time but I am taking the SAT 3 more times before the stupid test change. I have no idea what my chances are and I just wanted others opinion on the matter. Will dropping AP English hurt me alot? And overall do I have a decent shot?
Thanks so Much!
What do you mean that you know you got the math right by checking online? Discussion of SAT tests online is a violation of the agreement you signed when taking the SAT…
I understand that, I did not discuss any of the questions… I rechecked my work be remembering questions and googling how to go about solving that type of problem. Thank you for the accusation though!
I think you need to wait to see what you get on the SAT before anyone can really tell you your chances of being accepted. When you get that update your post and also include your unweighted GPA.
As for the English class, Do you have any grades back yet to gauge how you are doing? What do you plan to study?
Ok thank you, that makes sense, my SAT score predictions are substantiated only by my practice tests, so it is fair to assume some inaccuracy. I am very confident I will be in that range after my four test dates, because I am already there on practice tests. As far as the English class goes, we’ve been in it for a few weeks and I have a 79 in it. I can bring it up to about an 85 by the end of this week, but there is no chance it will get higher. No one in the class has an A currently, and I got the highest grade on the first paper with a flat 90. She claims she was “easy on us” with the first paper. My next grade was a 75 on a paper. This was above the classes average and the highest grade I’m aware of is an 83. I know that an 85 in an AP is not bad, but this is junior year AP english we’re talking about. Through talking with family members and older friends who have taken the course, they say that she is making it way too hard and that they got through with an effortless A. My biggest fear is that colleges will see an 85 for AP English on my transcript and compare it to all the other kids who had reasonable teachers and had 95s in AP English because in every other school thats what everyone gets in the class.
My D took AP English and it was not an easy class at all, so I think you may be wrong in assuming that AP English is always an easy A. If you intend to study the humanities in college, I’d keep the class even if it means a B. If not, I’d talk to your counselor about dropping down. If you did that, will you still get the “most rigorous coursework” check mark by your counselor? I’d want to know that.
