I'm a sophomore but I have 2 B for undoubtedly idiotic reasons, with mistakes from both me and my teachers. All of my other grades are As, so the question is: Will I be able to get into NCSSM (the best high school in NC)? Assume that I've got everything else perfect (extracurricular activities, participation in competitions, great reviews, etc).

I'm worried because the county NCSSM advisor stated that you can only have at least 1 B. Could anyone check to see if I even have a chance?!

My sister is already in NCSSM. Does this even partially affect my chance?

I don’t think this is the best place for NCSSM. But I have 2 old friends of mine go there. 2 B’s definitely hurts a lot, since freshman and sophomore year generally is mostly easy classes and everyone has A’s. One of my friends who went there had nothing but 100’s on his transcript. I personally never did the application for there, but unless you wrote some amazing essay or had a teacher willing to metaphorically die for you in their recommendation I think it’s a long shot to get in. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get in though, ever since they did away with the free ride to a NC school, I see no use in going there.

Flaracos:
It may come down to the SAT scores and your district (how competitive is it?). We were told that they look at the whole package…grades, SAT scores, extracurr., recommendations and whether your needs can and will be met in your currect setting, etc.
I don’t know if having a sibling there helps, but there seem to be a lot of students who have a sibling there now or one who went there. I suppose on some level it could help in that NCSSM would know that you and your family know what you are getting into and really understand NCSSM.
Try not to stress to much. The road through the application and then waiting is a long one. Hang in there and know that if you do not get it, you will still be fine.
Hope, pray, plan, etc. to get in, but have your ducks in a row for your course selections and activities at your homeschool next year in case you do not.
One thing for sure, no one seems to know for sure how they FULLY decide which students to select!
Also, what were the grades of B in?
T

I lied by posing as a future sophomore I would be (I’m currently a freshman…or sophomore…whatever you are in the intermission of summer break).

I also should’ve mentioned that I am unique in the aspect of winning the Local Chemistry Olympiad and participating in the National Chemistry Olympiad.
I have participated in the science olympiad as well in the fields of forestry and Mission Possible.
I have won a trophy from Mathcounts in elementary school.
And one from a soccer tournament (when I was 8 or 9 or 10 or 11 or 12). And a badge from something called Biotrin (don’t even remember how I got that one).
I’m in marching band too.

And I received Bs in world history honors and geometry honors…I feel disappointed of the second one the most because math is generally one of my strong parts. I possibly wasn’t paying attention…damn I punch myself too much.

I am pretty proficient at chess and have joined the club. My timed, real-setting practice SATs are generally 1910-2240, but I still have to work on my essays a little.
I’ve taken the SAT Chemistry Subject Test and gotten an 800, and have a knowledge of chemistry possibly more than that of an AP student…or dare I boast, a college student (definitely not professor though, or else my dad would respect me more).

Weighted GPA: 4.5
Unweighted GPA: 3.8

So…sophomore year’s coming up and I have seven months. I AM PREPARED!!! Actually no I’m in the slums. Any advice?

It sounds like we’re pretty much in the same boat. I have 3 B’s, and my GPA is a 4.35 weighted and 3.8 unweighted. I had B’s in Honors Earth, Honors Geometry, and Honors English 1. I was supposed to be in Honors Biology, but I transferred schools and lost recommendations. I ended up taking both. I made an 85 in earth sci. because of my horrible teacher. She’d give out a project, then change the rubric the day before it was due. Biology was a breeze. I had a final grade of 98. I think it’s fishy that over half her students made an 85 though… Anyways, I made a hundred on both of those exams and A’s on the others. I’ve never taken the SAT, but I’m shooting for at least an 1800(my school’s average is a 1394). I’ll be ahead of the other applicants from my school because I’ll be done with my math and science requirements by the end of this year.
My Schedule:
1st Semester-
French 1
Honors Chemistry
Honors Algebra 2
Honors English 2
2nd Semester-
Honors Civics & Economics
French 2
Honors Physics(Top level science at my school)
Honors Pre-Calculus
I’m also involved in my school’s theatre program and quiz bowl team. I’m also my homeroom representative. I would’ve taken AP Chemistry along with Physics, but it wouldn’t fit into my schedule. I’m from CD3.

Sounds solid. My sister has everything exactly the same as me, except that I oofed my grades a bit and did not participate in environmental or key club. However…actually, I have no idea what I’m talking about. Tell me (when the time comes of course) if ya get in this year buddy! Imma just move this convo to the aforementioned link. Cya!
