I am a senior looking to apply here for early action. I take IB classes but am not a full diploma candidate because that was too much of a workload for someone who did sports 20 hours a week. My cumulative GPA is 4.28 while my jr year gpa was a 4.67. I had good extra curriculars being on a high level club swim team and breaking school records/winning conference individual titles. I am in the school’s highest level orchestra and honors orchestras in the region. Aside from that I have 1500 SAT (730 r/w, 770 m) and plan to major in neuroscience/biochemistry (I am a female so idk if this is an advantage for STEM?). I think it is worth mentioning that I am a legacy here and am a diehard wahoo basketball fan who went to MANY acc tournaments and uva-duke games haha (I know the second part doesn’t matter to my app, just stating one of the reasons I would love to go here). Aside from that my essays are solid and my short answers are as well, I hope. If anyone could give me a tentative analysis on anything I could improve or use to strengthen my app that would be great since I stress over these things like crazy.
If you’re in-state, you’re very much in the running. UVA’s stats are widely available on the SCHEV website:
You don’t mention if you are OOS or IS. If you are OOS, I think having the legacy connection can help with admissions (legacies are admitted at higher rates than IS and OOS students). That being said, rigorous course load and grades in those classes (and upward trend ) are very important in applying to UVA. A full IB diploma would most likely show that you are taking the most rigorous courses available to you. Your SAT scores are great. Good luck.
Hi, sorry I forgot to mention I am in state (northern virginia). I don’t know of the myth of being ultra competitive due to the number of qualified applicants in NOVA but I hope my chances aren’t hurt by it. Thank you!!
Just basing on my experience with my twin kids (also from NoVA), your stats are very competitive. The only thing that I would mention is the lack of ECs related to your major. I think that many of my kids’ classmates over estimated how important their sports ECs were and were disappointed when they did not get in. Again, this is just from my experience. Both of my kids got into UVA, but did not end up attending. One had lots of sports and the other did not have any. Both had good grades, great/near perfect test scores, and multiple years of major-related ECs. Good luck!
You only mention sports and orchestra, hope there’s more. The school is holistic. Also, what’s the unweighted gpa?
UVA is difficult to predict, even for legacies. In part, because they want in-state diversity, to serve the whole state. And northern VA is particularly tough, considering not just TJ, but other solid high schools producing great applicants. You need to learn more about what this college wants and looks for, to make the most of your own app.
Just want to chime in that activities don’t have to be tied to current academic interests. Few students actually declare the major they select as their interest in the application.
Keep in mind that GPA is not where we make our decision. For an IB student, we are much more concerned with looking at where your HLs and SLs are and how your grades are. There are students with identical GPAs and very different transcripts!

you should get in with your sat scores and gpa
