Will i get into william and mary, binghamton, other public ivies?

3 year gpa (out of 100):94.35
Junior year gpa: 97.75
Act:30
I go to a very competitve and academically rigorous school on long island that doesn’t offer honors or ap because it is an honors school.
I have an increasing average over 3 years, am an officer in the science club and intramural club, and also participate in the economics, history and general service organization. I also am volunteering as a senior leader, helping freshmen with orientation(as a leadership role) and have volunteered every other friday night since sophomore year watching, playing with and tutoring special needs children(i will probably write my essay on this).
I am a white male, so i will not contribute to any school’s diversity. Do i have a chance at william and mary, or other schools like it like uva, michigan (ann arbor) and other public ivies?

My act breakdown is
English 33
Math 32
Reading 30
Science 26

By the way i will respond with yours and thanks in advance!

So you say that the only way to contribute to diversity is only by race?

Can your parents afford the OOS tuition at these schools?

I do not normally do these “chance me” threads, but this time I will.
I think you are a match for Binghamton, which means getting in is no guarantee. You might want to add Buffalo to your list. I think OOS public “ivies” are a reach for you- I can’t speak for all of them, but several have OOS caps. If I were you I would add schools such as UConn, Ohio State, Pitt, and Delaware to your list of OOS publics. Does your school have Naviance? It is also important to consider what your parents are willing/able to pay. Good luck!

Im a baptized roman catholic, Mrduque, so I’m saying it wouldn’t help me gain admission over a minority

And twogirls, even though william and mary is a 29-33 mid 50% act is that really a big reach? And although the oos is high for w&m i would receive financial aid and hopefully the aid would be just instate for virginia

I believe W&M has an OOS cap that is higher than UVA, however it is still a reach despite being a possible match on paper. Most of these top public schools are reaches for OOS students, and you will be competing with extremely talented and well qualified kids. I know students from the NY/NJ area with higher scores (33+) who were rejected. I think you should apply, but I think you need to add other schools such as the ones I mentioned.

I am a little confused by your statement regarding financial aid…?

JMU is another school that you may want to add to your list of OOS publics.

i believe you will be fine for them

@planetjanet “public Ivies” such as UVA, Michigan, etc are very hard to get into when you do not live in that state. These schools are going to be a big reach for two reasons- 1. being OOS and 2. competing with other OOS students who have higher test scores and accomplishments. This does not take anything away from @Johnschnell55 - he is obviously a very good student. I think he should apply to these schools if he wants to, however it would be in his best interest to also apply to some OOS publics that are likely to accept him. There are a lot of excellent OOS publics out there besides the ones on his list. The OP is from an area of the country that is flooded with applicants to many of these reach schools. He should ask his GC if students like him every got into schools such as Michigan and W&M, and he should check the NPC with his parents to make sure that these schools are affordable. Binghamton is a match.

W&M is the one that I do not know a tremendous amount about. I know two students from the same geographic area as the OP who were recently rejected with higher test scores (33 ACT) and similar (or higher) GPAs.

Do not underestimate how competitive these public schools are for OOS students. That being said, the OP needs to speak to his guidance counselor to see how students from his school have done in recent years.

My guidance counselor said they w&m was an exact targer which is how I even found out about it. Thanks twogirls

Good luck! Just make sure you have a few safety schools that you like and can afford.
