I'm an Indian student taking courses for mechanical engineering in a two year college in my country. My college follows the US grading system but i can only get a maximum of 47 credits in one year (2 semesters). The UCs need at least 60 hours for transfer which i can get only after one more semester which gets over by December but the deadline for applications is September.

I can consider applying after my 4th semester(gets over by June,2011) but that way ill be wasting a year as ill get admitted to the 2012 Fall semester.

Are there any spring openings for international transfer students? Or is the any other way i can do this?

It is my dream to study in a UC. Please help!!!

Does it matter?

What if you “lose” a year? That will mean you’ll spend three 3 years at your dream school. You can place in more advanced courses so you don’t repeat subject matter that you’ve already taken. There is no shortage of more-and-more advanced courses at the UCs. You should be able to take some graduate school courses in your senior year.

And having that extra year will help you adjust to the culture etc.

So my sense is that the issue for you is how to best present yourself so that you’ll get accepted as a strong transfer student, and to then get accepted. It would be very difficult for the admissions committee to translate the 2 years at your college to two years at the american university.

Hold it there. I REALLY hope you read this, because it probably will be helpful.
You turn in your application EVEN BEFORE you finish your final semester. Here’s how it works:

One year coursework, good.

***** First semester of second year, you turn in your application. Did you honestly think that we all wait until we finish our credit? That means everyone will have to wait an year, not just you!

In the application, you do what it says. It’s self-explanatory. You turn in your previous transcrip(s), and then you state what classes you are taken, and AS LONG as you finish your required courses by the end of the year before you transfer, you will be fine, granted that you get into the school in the first place.
