so, i live in texas, and if i were to get into ut austin, it would be much cheaper than minnesota (4k/yr, so about $16-20k). however, if i were to get the gold national scholarship, they would be the same price and hopefully i would be able to make a decision based on which school i like more rather than worrying about cost. so, what are my chances for gold national or at least maroon national?

unweighted gpa: 3.7 / 4

class rank: top 8%

Out of State (Texas)

National Merit Commended Scholar

31 ACT (35 Math and 32 English)

Marching Band all 4 years and section leader senior year
Member of Math and Science Team

Some tutoring jobs where I worked 2-3 hours a week.

also, any other scholarship info please? i’ve already been accepted and REALLY want to go. my family is rich so i won’t get any need based aid, but if i could get this school to the same price/ cheaper than ut austin that would be fantastic!

abcd…For what it’s worth, I would think you are in a good position to get at least the Maroon National. One description of these scholarships says top 5% class rank for the Gold and top 10% for the Maroon, while another page lumps their description together and says top 15%. In any case, I think your stats would put you in line for one of them. D1 is OOS also and waiting to see what scholarships might be offered as well. Good Luck!!

hopefully they do weighted, cause only smarter kids can get higher in weighted. you can take all lower level classes and get a 4 and beat out much smarter people

for one thing, i don’t care at all about prestige, i care more about program quality (minnesota and ut both have excellent chemical engineering programs, and minnesota was actually slightly better). another thing was that i kinda want to get out of this state. im very liberal and being stuck in texas is pretty terrible haha. i do realize that ut austin is much more liberal than the rest of texas, but i wanted a change of scenery too. and of course, i miss the snow! (i used to live up north when i was younger)
