Hello, I recently graduated HS and was planning to go to a school for a year, get my grades up, and transfer to a good school where I'd ultimately want to be (top 40 perhaps).

This is my dilemma:
I applied to Stony Brook which is a very good local school. However, I only got accepted for the Spring '10 semester. If I take on a full course load at CC for one semester, and a full course load at SB for a semester, will it look like I transferred twice when I ultimately apply to a school that I want to go to?

It doesn’t matter if it looks like you transferred twice especially when its at a CC plus 4 year school and I imagine you’d be in your freshman year.
Most top 40 school applications will ask you why you’re transferring, you can explain your reasons, and if you want(which you don’t have to) explain why it looks like you attended two schools.

It matters, when you’re going from 4 year to 4 year every semester/school year.

BTW why not just stay at CC and transfer out after a year or two and just apply directly to those top 40 schools? i’m pretty sure worst case scenario is that you’ll end up at stony brook.

Ahh, thanks. If I go to Stony, I’ll want dorm there. It’ll be easier, I guess, since I don’t have a car. I still kinda want the college experience lol! Also, my mother isn’t crazy about me being at a CC, so getting out as quick as I can would be ideal.

I posted this on Yahoo and the responses I got pretty much said that going from CC to SB to wherever I want to go show “progression” and isn’t necessarily bad at all-- what do you know about this?

I don’t know why CC has such a bad rep. It’s a very economical route and there are a lot of situations that could call for attending one besides lack of ability.

People transfer from CC’s to places like Vanderbilt (where I’m going in the Fall) all the time. Vandy’s a top 20 school, so I doubt you’ll have trouble going from a community college to a top 40 school.
