Does anyone know if Maryland is scheduled to install air conditioning in more of the dorms? It looks like Denton is getting it for Fall 2011, but I was wondering about the other freshman dorms. I thought our tour guide said that all of the dorms would get air-conditioning in the next couple of years, but it might have been another school's tour guide. I took so many, I get them mixed up :)

My son is a freshman living in Easton which has no air conditioning. He was told that Easton and many other freshman halls are getting it this year.

DD1 is graduating from UMD, and they’ve been “planning” to install a/c throughout campus dorms since before she got there! I think when they install a/c they have to do a lot of work, including revamping the entire electrical system, etc. In addition, obviously it is costly, which explains the slow progress…and it seems like the dorms where traditionally the freshmen live will be the last ones to get it…RHIP (rank has its privileges!)

Both of my D’s had no a/c freshman year. As long as you have multiple fans in the room, it makes it bearable most of the time, and it’s really mostly miserable for the first handful of weeks of school. I think there were a few nights of sleeping in the a/c lounge on couches, or mattresses drug in there a couple of times. (Besides, it helps “toughen” you up as a freshman? hahaha). They have, however, LOVED having a/c since freshman year!

I am with astro on this.

AC is really not that big of a deal…we are not talking UMiami or GT, where it is 90 degrees with 100% humidity for 50% of your time at school.

It is maybe 3-4 weeks in each semester and if the two of you bring oscillating fans, you will be fine.

Remember even if they have AC UMD controls it, you do not have a thermostat in your room to decide how cold or warm you want it to be.

Our DS lived in New Leonardtown as a soph, and I remember him beacching because they converted the system over too early. They will cut the air and turn on the heat, seasonally. That yr they cut the heat and turned on the air and they were hit with a week of unseasonably cold temps. They were freezing.

Just take fans and you will be fine…plus dorms have a way of getting a stagnant smell/odor very quickly, especially when pizza is being delivered up and down the hall. Fans clear the air.
