Will most of the people who are ultimately accepted receive "likely" letters?

No. Only about 250-300 likely letters are sent.

no
(10 chars)

...they said less than 100 last year.

700 some admitted early with a 90% matriculation rate and 300 likelys with what a 30% admission rate?
still 700 + 300 meaning only 800 spots left for admission for the rd

Don't forget the SCEA deferreds - of whom 249 were admitted last year - with about a 13-14% admit rate.

All of which leaves the poor "regular" RD saps in a tough spot. Of course Yale is not unique in this respect.

The highest possible yield rate is everywhere the goal, and the "likely letter" is the latest yield-boosting device.

Why is that? Because early response makes the heart grow fonder?

wait has anyone gotten a letter yet?

Yes.

The time tested theory is that first loves are intense - you'll always have a soft spot in your heart for the first girl or boy who kissed you.

That is the theory behind the "likely letter", the "early write" etc.

Yeah I just got a likely letter. GuitarmanARS has one too. Yeah, and I wasn't even thinking about Yale but this likely letter made me so happy that I'm considering them now.

Arghhh!!! I'm so jealous, but congrats!

zogoto, congrats.

Thanks guys.

out of curiousity, when were your likely letters mailed out? Not that I'm checking in my mailbox or antying, putting my hopes up for something that is almost equivalent to winning the lottery...

I just got mine. But here's the question, why do they send most of the likely letters? Athletes...URMs....Broadway leads who cured cancer....?

yield protection might be the reason.

I got one too!
In my case... not sure about others, the letter explicitly talked about various opportunites to join in on research that they're guaranteeing for me.

Yeah I got a package today. It had a new course catology (05-06), a shirt, some stickers, and a handwritten note by a sophomore at Yale that talked about my research interests. Weird!

That's so cool! I'm a huge fan of t-shirts and stickers. :) The catalog for YALE wouldn't hurt either.

Congrats!

I want a shirt and stickers...:(
