Freshman year I finished with a 3.8/3.8 weighted (1st semester/second semester) and as a sophomore a 3.8/3.6 but over the summer I matured a lot and brought my grades up to 4.0/4.4.

Will the poor grades early on keep me out of UCLA or will admissions officers be glad to see that I matured and improved?

Well first of all your UC GPA excludes freshmen grades so don’t even worry about that. UC GPA is based only on your sophomore and junior year grades. (However, they do take a look at your grades from the others years.)
And yes, from my experience it seems like improved grades do seem to impress. Improvement is always a plus. I got in with pretty sour freshmen grades and even my first semester of sophomore year but 2nd semester sophomore year and beyond my grades jumped pretty significantly (which is when I decided on what I wanted to do for a career).
That’s my brain on the matter.

thanks for the reply and advice, that makes me feel more comfortable (which is why we all come to CC )
