As of now, I am planning my study abroad for fall semester of junior year. At the same time, I would like to have an internship set up that following summer (junior into senior year) because I know that is the typical path that business students take. Will being overseas affect my change of getting an internship? For example, lets say I apply to an internship and the company is interested and wants to set up an interview, would they change their mind about hiring me if I told them that I was in a foreign country? I find it a little bit hard to believe that they would work around my schedule seeing as they have thousands of other applicants.
It shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Companies that hire interns know what they’re getting into and they know that juniors go abroad pretty frequently. If you go through fall recruitment, it is possible that they will offer you a Skype interview. If they are desperate to get you in person, they may very well fly you in for an interview day. In any event, most companies recruit interns in the spring, so if you’re back for the start of spring semester, it should be a moot point.
@chrisw Do companies really ever fly people in for interview day for internships? I know it happens for actual jobs, but that’s a pretty rare occurrence alone.
It certainly isn’t as common, but it happens. My friends who were going for internships in bulge bracket banks and MBB got brought into the office they were going to work. For most, from Philly, it was a trip on the Acela to NYC or a flight to Boston, but people I know did get flown into Chicago and San Francisco. Of course, those flights are generally only a few hundred bucks roundtrip, versus a flight from Asia/South America/Africa/Europe, which is almost certain to be >$1,000 given the timetables we’d be talking about.
For full time jobs, it was pretty common for people to get brought in, all expenses paid, for interviews, and I went through recruitment in 2010, when nobody was even hiring! I’m sure things have changed in six years, but probably not so dramatically.
Is it likely? No, not at all. Flying somebody in from another continent is rare even for FT positions (until you’re talking about upper level positions), so don’t count on it… the Skype interview is far more likely. But is it possible? Sure.
Well just goes to show, how ignorant I am lol. I mean my college isn’t terrible but I’ve only heard of maybe 4 people getting flown in for interviews of FT jobs after graduating, but all 4 of those people were like tippy-top students. The skype interview though, is very common though, so I could definitely see that happening especially if you’re one of their top picks pre-interview.
Not sure what kind of internship you have, but I did mine for a startup in Bali which is pretty far from the UK. I was studying abroad in China at the time and did all my interviews through Skype. I don’t think it will be a big problem. However, I had to pay for my own ticket to Bali. It was not that expensive since it was from China and totally worth it.
