Will switching programs at CC allow for continued financial aid?

Hello all,

I received an email from my Community College (CC) explaining that I am ineligible for Financial Aid at their institution. But would like to know if I changed my program (was previously Business Administration) to something else, would I be able to continue taking some more classes at the CC and receive my financial aid? Or what if I transferred to another community college, would I be able to start fresh and receive my financial aid package from that institution? Is it as simple as that, or am I out of luck for Community Colleges?

Background. I have my associate's degree in Business from this CC. I have taken 65 credits at this CC, but a total of 104 for my entire college career (attended one other university). I am currently trying to get my Bachelors degree in business, but I know that community college has some classes that I can take there (in order to save some $).

Here is the letter:

"This communication is to inform you that you are no longer eligible to receive financial aid at Macomb Community College. If you are receiving a private scholarship or other merit award, you may still be eligible for these funds.

We are unable to offer you financial aid to continue your education at Macomb Community College because you have attempted credits in excess of 150% of your program requirements. Federal regulations prohibit students from receiving financial aid at Macomb Community College once they have reached the maximum credit hours for their program. Therefore, your eligibility for financial aid has been cancelled. It is your responsibility to read and understand Macomb's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. To do so, visit the Financial Aid Homepage and select Satisfactory Academic Progress listed under Site Navigation.

You may submit an appeal explaining why you are taking additional classes and your expected objective at Macomb Community College. You must attach your current program plan printout from WebAdvisor to the appeal form. The program plan must indicate your current, active program of study and the courses you need to complete your program at Macomb Community College. A committee will review the appeal and you will be notified of the result. Submission of an appeal does not guarantee reinstatement. Your letter told you may do so by

You are accumulating excess units there and it seems time to move on to the 4 year. There are caps on how much you can receive. Switching to another college won’t solve the problem. You aren’t switching majors so I don’t think the exception situation will apply to you.

Please keep in mind that SAP rules apply to 4 year schools, too. If you have 104 hours already and need to take more at the CC before transferring, you may very well run into SAP difficulties toward the end of your bachelor’s program.

Thanks for the replies. I actually have written a letter of appeal about 2 years ago explaining that I only had a few classes available left to take at CC, so I was hoping to get another year at CC. They denied it.

I was just hoping that switching programs or diff CC would be a loophole, but I guess not.

^That’s why SAP is there.

You’re being incentivized to move on to complete your bachelors. This is by design and no accident. You’ll need to carefully plan your remaining credits with your bachelor’s institution and program to ensure you can complete the degree’s requirements by the time you will be cut off again at the new school.

Ok…I’ll bite. It sounds like you just want to take a few additional classes at the CC. It also sounds like you have taken the max they allow, and you also will not be a matriculated student in one of their programs any longer.

Why don’t you enroll in a four year college and finish your degree?
