Will TASFA pay for my college expenses?

I recently had sad news delivered to me by UT-A. Apparently I'm not eligible for ANY scholarships at all from ANY SCHOOLS because I'm not yet a permanent resident.

I AM though a LEGAL resident and my permanent residency is still processing. I just don't know when I'm going to receive it.

So since I'm not eligible for any financial aid at all from the school or from FAFSA, I turned to TASFA.

I have a question about TASFA though. Will TASFA pay for all my college expenses? I seriously and hopefully hope so because by this rate, I won't be able to afford college at all!

Thanks for the responses.

What is TASFA?

Looks like you should be eligible to apply for aid- which means that a combination of work study- grants- loans should be available but I don’t see anything that indicates that 100% need would be met.

However, if you are able to pay instate rates at a community college, get a job/loans that can cover room and board, you should be able to transfer to a 4 year school to get your diploma.

Isn’t TASFA the Texas version of FAFSA (in a way). Isn’t it the form and process to determine if a student qualifies for Texas aid (like Cal Grants in Calif)? (That’s what a Texas friend told me, but maybe I misheard.)

I doubt TASFA provides a “free ride”. It may provide a grant that pays for some of tuition, but not room, board, books, etc.

Does anyone know the max TASFA provides?

It looks as though UTA doesn’t even participate: [AIE - TASFA Application](http://www.aie.org/State/TASFA/)

Erin’s Dad is right. UT Austin is not on the list.

OP…you need to look at this list to find schools that would take TASFA.

You may end up taking a “gap year” and working until your residency thing is worked out.

TASFA is the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid. It is designed for students who are Texas residents for tuition purposes through the House Bill 1403 law. It allows non-citizens who graduated from Texas high schools (and attended for at least 3 yrs) to pay in-state tuition and qualify for state aid. Types of aid include the Texas Excellence Grant, the Texas Top 10% Scholarship (really a state grant), the College Access Loan, and institutional aid like the Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG). Most schools have far more qualified students than funds, so you should submit the TASFA as early as possible.
The appendix of the 0910 application (p.15) does include both UTA (Arlington) and UT (Austin) in the list of participating schools. My school is NOT listed and DOES participate! Submit the TASFA to each state school you are considering.
It is hard to give an award estimate, because the state legislature doesn’t release allotment info until late spring. This years maximums were $6080 Texas Excellence Grant and $2000 Texas Top 10% Grant. The College Access Loan may be for the full cost of attendance, and TPEG amounts are set by each school.
Also, be aware that males must register for Selective Service to receive state aid.

Thanks so much emerald and zlc. Those info really helped a lot. Specially zlc’s. So it won’t pay that much but it’ll pay for some. Mkay

TASFA is a financial aid application FORM…which is submitted so school who will take it. The TAFSA folks to not give out the money. The schools do…so TAFSA doesn’t “pay”…it just helps the schools determine your eligibility for need based aid.
