I just got my SAT scores back and i am very depressed about my SAT score. I am usually not a great test taker and this was my first time take the SAT with no studying.

Math- 570 (i didn't time to have to finish 10 questions in a section)
Reading- 490
Writing - 390 Essay-6

Total- 1450/2400

I am not a terrible student. i get all A's in honor and AP classes , i also have a 4.0 g.p.a unweighted. i am in top 10% of my class. i can do A LOT better than this and i am willing to study a lot and get my scores up. But will colleges see my low sat score or will they just see the higher one. My school keeps every sat scores in my transcript. Any tips to do better on the writing section??? i am really depressed my that 390

I really want to go to Penn State University park. What would my scores have to get up to , to go there?? I am also about to be a senior and can i take the SAT in october and November?? or October is my last chance of taking it?

I’d bump up your scores a hundred points or two if Penn State is your first choice. Google “how likely is your student to be admitted to penn state” and click on the first search result.

With a 4.0 weighted (I’d imagine yours is closer to a 4.4 since you take all honors), you need a 1600 to be considered “likely” for admission to PSU.

You have till January of 2013 … or maybe even March of 2013 to take your SATs once again… As cc123sb stated… you would need somewhere around 1600-1800 to be considered for PSU…, but I know for a fact a score around that range will get you in…

Unless the college states that you have to send all past SAT scores in, I’m pretty sure they won’t know how you did before.

390 on the writing is a score immigrants should be getting… That is pretty bad… -.- I am extremely displeased…
All I can say is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE with the Blue Book

You can prevent College Board from sending SAT scores to a college by exercising score choice when you order scores sent. However, you have an additional issue. You state your high school puts all your scores on your high school transcript. Thus, when that is sent to colleges to which you apply, the colleges will learn your score even if you exercise score choice with CB unless your high school will remove that information from your transcript (ask and find out).

In any event, colleges use highest scores for admission and your current low score will not be held against you if you can submit a higher score. In Penn State’s case it uses that test with the highest composite to determine admission.

Well in my defense i am an immigrant. I came to U.S. when i was 7th grade. English is not my first language. But that is not an excuse because i was in ESL for about 2 years and then i got out of it because my English was apparently good. I am extremely disappointed in myself too. I am going to practice till i get a better score. Thank you for your answers!!

If it’s on your transcript they’ll probably see it, but they usually only count the highest (superscore) anyway. Penn state looks for around 1700/2400 give or take depending on gpa, ecs, etc. If you can’t make it to main, you could try one of their other campuses and transfer after two years (not to say you won’t make it-just something to think about).
