I’ve been admitted to NYU, but before making a decision, I wanted to know whether the cost of the education and living in NYC will exceed the 70K estimated by NYU or can I comfortably sort the finances with the 70 as a base? I am an international student btw.
Can you afford to pay 70k out of pocket, ie your parents won’t take a loan for you?
An issue with an urban campus located in NYC means that you’re supposed to find your fun in the city (where you have to pay) rather than on campus (where most colleges provide it for free) but you can’t get into clubs and bars.
So, all in all, I’d say you should plan for about $1,000 extra per year or even semester.
I have a scholarship, and my parents are paying for me, I just wanted to know an estimated budget so we can sort out our finances. Thank you!
Hi, I’m an NYU sophomore. Meal plan/housing/tuition is obviously set. I haven’t had to spend as much money on books as I feared, but I have friends who are spending a TON. Also, it’s New York! There’s constantly things to spend your money on. I can’t give you an average, but depending on your lifestyle you can either keep it within the 70k or you could go drastically above.
Remember that tuition, room & board, and other fees will increase each year until you graduate. So, by the time you graduate it will be quite a bit more.

I guess you found that $70K per year is affordable given that you wanted NY above anything else!
I hope that your return on your investment of $280,000 for 4 years will be recompensed in your pay in Sri Lanka. You know that you are expected to return to your country after your graduation? You cannot expect to be employed in the US after graduating because of strict immigration rules that won’t allow that.
UIowa is better for English so hopefully this student really chose Iowa over NYU.
I decided to decline the offer at NYU, stating finances as my reason. Thank you for the input and suggestions
