Will These 1st Semester Grades Kill Me?

Hi there,

I'm going to apologize in advance if I'm not doing this thread-post right or if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm sort of new to this whole "forum" concept. :(

So, I'm a senior in high school. Female, caucasian. I got deferred from Columbia University (applied to Columbia College) after applying ED. My GPA's 3.67 at a super competitive public school and my SAT score is a 2180. Nothing too thrilling, I know, but I have good ECs. And first quarter, I received all As on my report card. Huzzah!

2nd quarter is shaping up a bit differently. Some of my schoolwork suffered due to the influx of apps I had to send to other schools. It now appears that I will be unable to avoid getting a big, fat B in AP Economics. In addition, my schedule's not horrifically demanding.

I'm taking:

AP Econ
AP Studio Art
AP Lit
Bio 2 Honors
Media
Gym (yeah that doesn't really count, I guess)

I should get As in everything else. If I get a B in Econ 2nd quarter, having gotten an A- in the class 1st quarter, will this totally throw off my 1st semester grades and cause Columbia to reject me come springtime?

What do you think? Will it kill me or not really? Please be honest, you don't have to sugarcoat things with me :)

Calm down. One B is not gonna determine whether you get in or not. And your schedule is actually pretty demanding. Three AP’s and an honors class does look like you’re challenging yourself. My advice: Don’t freak out about one grade. If you get a B in this class, but A’s in everything else that’s great! We’ve got less than three months until we find out. Instead of worrying about whether you’re gonna get in or not, spend that energy ensuring you do well in your classes. Worrying isn’t gonna help at all…good luck! :)

You’re allowed to apply to Columbia after being defered ED?

Huh, thought you weren’t. I’m not sure. Anyways, you’re on your A-game man. Three AP’s and honors? That’s amazing especially for senior year. Don’t stress it, you’ll be fine as long as time management works well for you.

Hey guys, thanks so much for responding  I shouldn’t be freaking out, you’re totally right.

Don’t worry about that one B. Remember, the school is looking at many, MANY different factors. Courses, extra-c’s, rec letters, interview, essays, supplemental materials, etc etc. The one B during senior year will not make or break Columbia’s decision. Good luck!
