WIll they check?

Hey guys ! So I’m applying to some test optional schools. Already applied to one for ED2.
Since I’m applying without submission of an SAT score, I’ve heard they’ll look at everything else more closely. I was thinking of sending them a writing portfolio of some of my write ups, I’ve mostly written film scene analysis papers. Along with artworks for an art portfolio. Do you think they will actually go through those additional materials?

It couldn’t hurt, unless they specifically say not to send supplemental materials.

If your work is of high quality (you could check with a teacher if you are unsure), then I would send them in.

Just make sure they welcome supplemental materials beforehand. Some do, some don’t.

I would not send in materials that the college does not ask for. Check with each college to determine if they accept supplemental materials, what type of supplements are accepted, what the required format is, what the deadline is etc.

I also would not send in any supplement unless it is of exceptional quality (ex. art school quality or close to it for an art supplement). Have an art teacher look at your art portfolio give an opinion as to the quality of the work – have an English teacher opine on the quality of your writing portfolio.

Sending extra stuff CAN hurt an application. There is a saying oft quoted on CC “the thicker the file the thicker the applicant.” Admission officer will not spend any more time on an application just because you send in writing and art supplements. So if the supplements are not outstanding then a portion of the admission’s officer time will be spent on things that may not be up to the quality of the rest of your application.
