Do vet schools look down on students who majored in Veterinary Technology? Will they feel like I majored in this just for the experience and took a spot from someone who “actually” wanted to be a vet tech?
Vets school is extremely selective so if I don’t get in I want to be a vet tech, but I am scared that vet schools will think I majored in this for the wrong reasons.
No, vet schools want to make certain that their applicants understand what it is like to be a veterinarian. Have you graduated yet, are you employed as a vet tech? It is not unusual to find vet students that began their careers as vet techs.
They won’t BUT you need to make sure you make it clear that you understand the big difference between being a tech and a vet. People who love being vet techs don’t always love being vets. Vets spend less time with the animals and more with the owners, research, looking and evaluating test results, paperwork, etc. If you can bring that you understand that across in essays or interviews you will be fine.
Several of my classmates were vet techs originally before they applied to vet school. I actually think that it is a positive thing when vet schools see that an applicant was previously a vet. It shows that this applicant has truly been immersed in the field, has seen the good days and bad days that vets go through, and still want to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
