Will we be united at Georgetown?

For everyone waiting for EA decisions, I can agonize with you. My boyfriend applied EA and he's an absolute nervous wreck right now. Good luck to everyone, from what I've read, you're all assets to Georgetown!

While you're waiting though, can I get a heads up on my chances for Georgetown if my GPA and class rank aren't great, but my ECs and SATs are very good?

Korean female, competitive MA public school that was ranked top 50 this year

GPA ~3.5 UW
Class rank ~40/390, could be lower or higher, possibly lower
Course load: most challenging available, I'll have finished 8 APs by graduation, and will have taken 9 tests
AP: Bio, US, English Language, Calc, Psych, Econ (online, both micro and macro), English Lit, Latin Lit
SAT: 640 math, 790 verbal in one sitting as a sophomore... I'm hoping to bring the math to a 700+
SAT 2: Taking after I finish my APs, probably Bio, IIC and Latin

EC: VERY heavy focus on debate, which is my absolute love and passion in life, plus I have a record that'll be very unique and impressive-- there's A LOT under this category, like 2 pages of states and nationals plus leadership and camps. I love love love debate more than almost anything.
A lot of politics, like DNC volunteer, volunteer for Kerry campaign, Dean campaign, US House and State senate campaigns, State senate intern, hopefully DC page, organized voter registration drive for Asian American voters, Rock the Vote
Asian Club, president
Amnesty International, president
Viola, districts and soloist and allstate whatnot, musical pit orchestra, summer orchestra, local youth orchestra, principal violist, chamber groups
Piano, 13 years, sending in tape with viola, violin, and piano pieces
Violin, various orchestras
Young Democrats, school branch and state branch
I help autistic kids learn Korean at my local Korean School
The Other Side (satire magazine) Editor in Chief
English language editor, New England Korean News
various church stuff, participated in fasting program for world awareness
published author, various essays and poems

NHS, National Latin Honor Society, National Forensics League, National Merit Semifinalist at least I think, National Latin Exam gold and silver medals, Congressional Award Silver Medal (working towards gold)

I'm hoping to be an International Politics major at SFS with a specialization in Foreign Policy and Policy Processes

I would absolutely love to go to Georgetown, and not because of the boyfriend. My passion lies in debate and international relations, and there's no other place than DC to be at the heart of it all. I'm sort of disappointed that Georgetown doesn't really have a debate team, but I'm hoping either one will come up soon, or I can establish one.

Am I aiming too high? I think applying EA will be a boost, although I'm not sure. Any feedback would be much appreciated! And again, good luck to you all!

So you have not yet taken any SAT IIs? I would say that you have a good chance, but your lack of SAT IIs greatly decreases the likelihood that you will get in (even though they say they are "optional," it is extremely hard to get in if you don't). Your ECs are very good, though. It's a toss up. And don't worry too much, you'll hear in probably 2 days anyway. Good luck! :)

I'm a junior, and I may be heading in a downward spiral in terms of GPA and the damned class rank :(

Good luck to you though, hopefully you'll both get accepted!

Ohhhhh... I didn't know that you were a junior. Then just take your SAT IIs (and preferably do well on them), get into the top 10% (your only 1 away), and your good. Then I would say that you have a very good chance of admission. :D

Thanks, I'm rooting for everyone who applied!
(and slaving away on Calc. talk about what all the cool kids do on Saturday nights :P)

LOL- I just got back from bowling! Fun times... :)

Haha bowling..I'm officially one of the worst bowlers ever. My best game was the first time after I did it and since them I have never broken 100! I'm the best in the worst sort of way. But I have fun.

Was it disco bowling?

Well, kind of. It had all the lights, except the music was from the 80s. :D

calidan--are you serious about the lack of SAT IIs being a serious detriment to an application?

On G-town's "Info. for 1st Year Applicants" sheet, it said that only scores from frosh, soph, and junior years will be looked at--senior year SAT scores will only be added to your file if you are deferred. Since a lot of people (like me) don't take their SAT IIs until senior year, and I haven't read anywhere that SAT IIs are even "encouraged" for EA applicants, I find it hard to believe that not having taken SAT IIs for EA will hurt me significantly. Yes, good SAT IIs would help, but I don't think that not having them for EA would work against someone (at least I hope not).

Sorry, I was just a little surprised (and worried) when I read your post.

joshh_87: Yeah...I don't think you really have to worry about the SAT IIs just yet. I know that, as you mentioned, it could help, but I do not believe that it could hurt. I mean, if G-town was going to use SAT IIs to DECIDE one's admission, they would require them for everyone. You should be fine. Don't worry. And hey, if you get in(WHEN you get in), you won't have to really worry about the Sat IIs at all...three less stressful hours wasted! Oh, and btw, considering you are kind of close to North Carolina (south-ish), do you think we could get our letters tomorrow? That would be nice.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, thanks for the reply. I actually took the SAT IIs a week ago (the 4th) because G-town will need them if I get deferred, and Tufts requires them for RD.

I'm thinking that we will get our letters tomorrow, along with most of the East Coast. The West Coast will probably get them Tueday, which leaves G-town one day of buffer room if the postal service happens to get behind a day.

I need to reiterate: math is the spawn of the devil himself, and good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Also, any further input would be great :)

He got in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I have to do the same :)

Congratulations to everyone, you all deserve it so much. And to those who got deferred, keep on trucking!

Hopeful Hoya Saxa
