Got the email yesterday. 35 ACT, 1500 SAT, 4.38 GPA, full IB, and strong leadership in ECs.
I second the question about air conditioning in Monroe dorms

Instate. 4.4 GPA, 34 ACT/13 APs. Lots of EC and awards Received Monroe, but nothing else. Tuition is higher at W&M than at UVA or Chapel Hill (rec’d a large grant) so its not looking favorable which is disappointing.
When my DD was there a couple of years ago, it wasn’t air conditioned, and it is an older building. However, it is a lot closer to the sunken lawn and downtown than other freshmen dorms. Those with a medical need can have a window AC unit. If you are a Monroe scholar, you don’t have to stay in that dorm, so check all the others too to determine your favorite.
According to the website, no AC in Monroe. There are about 6-7 weeks in the summer that you would want the window unit, and maybe a week or two in the Spring. I recall hearing that window or portable units are allowed in some dorms, not sure if Monroe is one of them.
I also received an offer to be a part of the Monroe Scholars Program yesterday. OOS, 1530 SAT, 4.2 GPA, debate captain, variety of regional/state level awards, internship at Congressman’s office, Girls’ State delegate, swim team, club soccer, volunteer work teaching English to the elderly. I also have legacy.
Congrats to all the Monroe Scholars Program recipients! What a wonderful accomplishment! Sadly my OOS D18 did not receive email or a postcards. I little disheartened because we visited campus twice, making a special effort to drive several hours to interview and do a Tribe Day this past fall. Her stats are very strong and similar to everyone posting here and her essay was great! And honestly I just think she ‘fits’ the academic, quirky, thoughtful, somewhat nerdy student profile. Wm&Mary is one of her top choices so she will be surely disappointed. But we press onward and keep watching the mail… hopefully there is still time!
The presumed point of even HAVING an elite program is to attract high-stats students who might otherwise go elsewhere. If I ran the school, I would air-condition that dorm. It doesn’t need to be a palace, but if any dorms get AC, you would think that one would too. It’s southern Virginia, after all! The truth is, all the dorms need AC. Climate change…
Guys when do you think the W&M regular decisions for everyone will come out? In previous years what was the gap between Monroe notifications and everyone’s?
@savagestudent7 they are usually released by the end of the third week of March, so my guess is that they will be sent out on Friday, March 23rd. Good luck to everyone who has not received decisions yet. That makes for nine tenths of the students who eventually get accepted (less than three percent of OOS applicants get an invitation for the Monroe Scholars program.) There’s absolutely no need to despair yet.
AC in all dorms would be ideal, but it’s really only an issue in Williamsburg until mid-September, before most students have had tests/mid-terms. It can be hot when students arrive in August, but it’s rarely very hot after about 9/15. Students are usually on campus through the first week of May. There’s rarely a need for AC at that point in the spring. Graduation is usually about six weeks before the beginning of summer.
I never had A/C in college, or growing up. The building is dated 1924 so I imagine the retro fit isn’t easy if it is even possible. One group of students is no more deserving of A/C over everyone else who is paying for their education. There are choices for other dorms if that is a strong preference.
@VAMom23 I completely agree, students can survive without AC, and not having it can force introverts into the public areas to make friends! I was just speculating in terms of “What does the College want to accomplish with this program?” I don’t really understand the strategic goal on the part of the College.
@ASKMother Don’t be disappointed! You are in very good company OOS here - no postcard, except those I’ll be sending from ‘the edge’, if decisions don’t start rolling in soon - and no Monroe. D OOS, mid-1500s SAT
Typically, it is 3rd week of March. It’s been Tues, Wed, and Thursday (looking at past year Decisions, Decisions blogs). My D is WM2019 and their release was later on a Tuesday night ( 830-9PM Eastern).
I will echo not to worry of you didn’t receive the cypher or Monroe. The vast majority of the currently enrolled WM students didn’t either.
Good luck to everyone. My D loves it there and her brother is waiting on word if he’ll be WM2022.
Don’t think any freshmen dorms have AC- when I attended WM (many many years ago) there was only 1 dorm (upperclassmen) that had AC. However with a doctor’s note my roommate was able to get permission for a window unit- she had asthma. However if you are not from VA- please note it is very humid in the burg in the summer which will last into September. And if you intend to spend a summer there, it is extremely humid. But it is a wonderful school and a beautiful campus, Go Tribe!
i got a financial aid email today requesting additional documents… is that pretty generic or is that a possible hint that i will be accepted?
I wonder what the common denominator (if any) is with receiving the postcard? We were a bit shocked to have received one and while flattered, are equally curious as to what it means in the grand scheme of things. We are OOS. One of the more cynical theories is that we have been designated as a full pay candidate…but, really it’s fast become a fool’s errand to try and make sense of any of this adventure we are all on.
Best of Luck!
I think the postcards just indicate they got to your file earlier.
@prodesse That is consistent with their past blogposts on the topic and to be honest, that they sent it did help morale here as we had not heard much since submitting the app. Either way, we’d like to believe there may be more to it…because if we don’t, we will spend the rest of the time until formal notice comes: anxious. ; )
Yes, these long long silences are demoralizing! Especially for the super organized kids who got their applications in by October!
