Congrats to all those who’ve heard positive news, but like others, no postcard or Monroe for my D. WM has been her top choice but between its high OOS tuition and no early recognition that they want her there, it is losing out to UNC (EA acceptance, Excel@Carolina offer) that has been doing a great job since late January of letting her know they want her to be a Tar Heel. Still hopeful though and in a couple weeks we’ll finally know. Good luck to all!
@pinkzebra1234 - my DD received that email today as well, asking for more info to verify our finances. My take is that admissions and fin aid are working independently of each other. Fin aid is just asking for more details. I don’t think it means anything regarding admissions status.
@lightspace Yes, I agree. Same for me. I’m OOS for UNC and got EA/excel@Carolina. I have felt welcome at every turn, getting emails and mail from them. I appreciate it a great deal and although I most likely won’t go to UNC, I still consider myself a Tar Heel!
W&M I almost forgot about until they emailed me. Still not sure on the school as I visited multiple times and it never really clicked with me. It’s super hit and miss, so best of luck to you and all y’all applying.
@pinkzebra1234 @dragon90 WM is not need-blind meaning admissions and financial aid talk. At this late date, one week into March, they are busy prepping aid awards to meet the deadline. As an emotional safeguard I would keep my expectations low as well, but from an outsider’s point of view it looks like a very positive sign. Hope so!!
I seriously would not take the lack of automated emails from W&M as a sign of lack of interest. They are a much smaller school than UNC, and have a much later Regular Decision deadline. That means a lot less resources and time to cram the application review into, and less time for small talk. I have talked to UNC grads who said that the many of the Excel Carolina opportunities fizzle (can’t enroll in the research classes for example). Excel and Honors Carolina, like Echols, is a means to “engage” a small part of the applicant pool a bit more to try and keep them from drifting elsewhere, . but realistically, once you are at the school, you are truly home (wherever you choose). By the time you are a junior, the “hook” they used to get you there really isn’t going to matter much. (That said, $$ speak a universal language!)
It will all be over in a few weeks, thank goodness!
W&M has all the admitted student day info on the web BTW if you are planning another visit.
I found a chart on the website. Jefferson, reeves and Yates have AC.

@prodesse i can handle the lack of AC, but I’m not sure my son will go for it.
We just received an email stating that the accepted students’ day in April 14, and that we will be receiving good news soon, and the financial aid package two weeks after. The funny thing is, our son who received the postcard has pretty much decided on UNC, and the son who hasn’t, is excited about WM!!
Hi @Essel Do you think the email went out only to people who got postcards or all potential “yes” kids?
The postcards go out to a small percentage of the eventual total admitted students and we know someone who received the postcard and the email. Not overly concerned yet…
@Essel did both of your sons get the email or only the one who received the postcard?
My older daughter is a sophomore at William & Mary. She applied early decision and was accepted. She absolutely loves it there. My younger daughter is a regular decision candidate this year. She is trying to decide between W&M (assuming she is admitted) and some larger schools. Her sister is in full recruitment mode, and I think she is winning her over. It is a very different dynamic in the process. Good luck to all!!!
Our older daughter will graduate this May. We can’t say enough good things about what a great experience she has had, amazing opportunities etc etc. We wish our younger one who is applying now was interested but she wants to be in a city. Fair enough. Please DON’T make your college decisions or let your kid make them on the basis of a/c in the dorms. That’s so minor - it’s nothing. You only want ac for a few weeks freshman year anyway and you can certainly do fine without it. So many other issues are so much more important in thinking about the fit between the kid and the college. Try to have your kids focus on meaningful priorities in making their decisions. I think it’s easy to get distracted by this minor stuff in the heat of the moment about choosing. Good luck to all of you.
My dad got an email today saying that they have received my initial application from the Common App, but I got that exact email when I submitted my application months ago. I just called them and they said it was a tech glitch, and that there’s nothing to worry about.
***They also said that decisions will be released during the last week of March; not on March 23rd as they have in recent years.
Thank you @damiller27 I also received that email (again). I thought it might be a glitch, because she got an email months ago saying everything was complete. Wonder how many calls they are getting today!
So unfortunate to hear the last week of March news – that leaves so little time for decisions.
@momo2x2018 that makes me feel a little better! I will be meeting you at ‘the edge’ before the end of the month … please tell me there is wine there! I think all colleges should be required by law to tell applicants by March 15th so you can try to figure out how you are going to pay for it before the May 1st deposit deadlines; especially if your dreams of a scholarship fall short. Luckily my D18 loves her 3 top EA acceptances but her 3 RDs are also great fits as well… so we wait. But going to visit the others in the process. Good luck! Don’t go to the edge yet!
Hi, all. My first post. Just registered to CC and have been following several threads for a few months. Thought you’d like to know that my D received a formal acceptance letter via snail mail today. We live in Illinois. My D did get a likely card a few weeks ago and an email last week informing her about being a Monroe Scholar. WM is/was her first choice by far, but she really needed the 1693 scholarship to go there. We knew that would be a long shot. She has other great options. Still waiting waiting to hear from the rest. Can’t wait for 3/28!
DS received his formal acceptance letter in the mail yesterday, along with an invite into the James Monroe Scholars program! He received a “Likely” postcard last month.
@pinkzebra1234 , @klbmom18 - Only my son who received the “Likely” card. He received his formal acceptance letter yesterday. He will be a Monroe Scholar, if he decides to go to WM!
Do you think all of the Monroe notifications have been sent?
What’s the current thinking on RD release date? From the archives it looks like it was 3/23 the last two years.
