William and Mary SAT question

Hello- I am wondering if William and Mary looks at the TOTAL SAT score or each section individually - specifically does an in state boy with a weighted 4.6 GPA have a chance with a 1310 total score, but a 740 reading and a 570 in math. Just worried that with the math low he wouldn’t be accepted. Note also that he would want to major in English or history. Also would apply early decision. Thanks for information.

They might overlook it (esp. because you’re English or history) but I would definitely try to bring the 570 up to at least a 600. Every school will look at both the overall and the subsections. If you don’t think you can bring it up but you’re in AB Calc or have consistent A’s in AP Stats and your past math classes, that might offset some of it

It appears that W&M superscores the SAT: http://blog.prepscholar.com/which-colleges-superscore-the-sat

So if he can re-take the test to improve the math score, that may be the solution.

Also, what are his ACT scores? Perhaps you don’t have to worry about the SAT scores if his ACT scores are good enough.

No expert here, but I do know a bit about the college as I live local and have a child there. I firmly believe them when they talk about taking a holistic approach to admissions and that you are more than your test scores. If I had to speculate, I would venture to guess that rigor and GPA weigh a bit more. I know students at the college with your son’s stats.

My advice is for your son to be as genuine as he can in his app. They want to see who he is as a person.

Also, the acceptance rate for males is higher than for females at the college, as they receive 2x the apps from females. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/03/14/want-a-college-admissions-edge-these-schools-might-give-you-a-gender-advantage/?postshare=4661458082560627&tid=ss_fb-bottom

Our son’s stats put him in the running but we are out of state. Is this as much of an issue at W&M as it is at UVA?

@Neurotic1 it’s definitely harder to get in out-of-state. OOS admissions rate is only 27%, and is nearly 20 points higher for in-state students: http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/facts-figures/admission-stats/index.php

However, as Catmatmc noted it’s also not as difficult for boys to get in as girls (still tough for everyone, but there are far more female applicants).

Good luck and go tribe!
