I have posted on the "What are my chances" forum. Thought I'd try this one as well. The question is, What are my chances for the College of William and Mary.

I am a white male from the Tidwater Virginia region. I am currently a senior at a very well known and competitive public high school. I am ranked in the top 5% of my graduating class of 560 students. I will graduate with 6 AP's and have always taken the most challenging curriculum available to me. My strengths and interests lean towards the math and sciences. I am very involved in my school's student government and have been for my 4 years of high school. I have held and currently hold leadership positions within my class and student government. I am in the National Honor Society, Spanish and Math honor societies and have held leadership positions in those orginizations. I am not athletic or musical. My current GPA is 3.9 and I am in a very challenging senior curriculum. I believe that I will have very good essays as well as teacher recommendations. The problem is my SAT scores are only a 1290 after the 3rd try! I'm taking the SATII's next weekend. Should I try again in December to get those SAT's over the 1300 mark? What if I don't? Thank you for your time.

Pedsox, I think your chances of getting into William and Mary are very good, for a numer of reasons. Firstly, you are a male from Virginia; W&M accepts males at a much higher rate then females because over 60% of thier applicants as well as their student body is female. Colleges like to keep a good male/female ratio. Secondly, you are from Va., only 35% of their applicants are from instate, but they must accept 60%-65% instate students according to state regs. Lastly, don't fret about your SAT it's not bad! You have a great class rank, great GPA and great ECs. You are a shoe in!

Here my stats (I indicated I would like to study business)

I just hope my SAT Verbal does not hinder my chances! thanks..

Johnst, you did not indicate if you are in or out of state. If in-state, I'd say your chances are very good. In-state SAT scores are right on with yours. Also, the fact that you are a male weights greatly in your favor. If you are out-of-state, your chances would be much, much better if you applied ED, (60-65%). But are still pretty good if RD. Did you declare your major?

Is WM your first choice? It's my first choice, I applied ED with very similar numbers as you. I am out-of -state girl. My GPA is a little higher and my SAT V was higher than yours but my SAT M was lower. Also, school very competitive, does not rank. Captain-varsity track. Great recommendations, lots of EC...all that other stuff...I'm freaking out, until D day. ED letters are going out Dec. 1st

Hey Johnst, I see you applied to Villanova too, so did I. If I don't get into WM that's probably where I'm heading. I know it has a really good business program is the school is a lot of fun!

Yeah, I indicated a potential business major, I am out-of-state but I applied RD, I did ED to NYU Stern...yeah my verbal score is pretty weak I hope it doesn't hurt too much..

Villanova: I applied to the business school but I'm not sure if I really want to go there since it's such a prep school... I'm just hoping I get into my ED School (Stern) I think I hvae a pretty good chance for Villanova I have other schools that I'd rather go to such as Georgetown, Stern and Wash U.....

Yeah, I'd rather go to Georgetown and BC, but I have to face facts. I don't want too many reach schools and I think with a 1320, RD, Georgetown is out of reach and BC is 50% because too many kids from my high school apply.

Yeah true, Georgetown is basically a no-no for me but I think I have a pretty strong esssay and I can ace the interview.. it's def a reach but its worth a shot I have a pretty long list with a lot of reaches..you never know

I really like Johns Hopkins but the crime rate scares me a little, what do you think are chances are there? I'm not too sure about their numbers.

ED is like 55% acceptance but RD is pretty tough.. they say they don't look at standardized tests as much as they look at the balance between ECs and academics.. For me its a reach/super reach

your SATs are similar to mine...I got a 1290 (m710 v590), and I applied ED to W+M (I'm from Maryland, so out-of-state). I'll have to let you know if I get in ;). I'm hoping my verbal score doesn't hold me back either. But strong AP scores or teacher reccomendations that talk about your writing ability may help balance the verbal score out. For example, I got a 4 on the AP Lang. exam, and my teachers often use my essays as examples in class, so I made sure that that was worked into my teacher recs, etc. Also, a 710 for math is at the 75% mark for W+M, so your above that :). Good luck with everything! did you apply ED?

yeah, since we have similar numbers probably reach for me too. Only advantage, I noticed that they have a greater number of male applicants (this is rare) and I'm interested in Liberal Arts -not a popular thing at Hopkins. If I don't get in WM I guess I'll apply.

Drivethrunerdie, I applied ED to WM too. 1320 SAT, pretty much the usual everything else. You know, don't need to list again, sports, NHS, Peer Ministry...I really love the school a lot. I can't stand the wait. I hope we BOTH get in! I wish I was one of those 1440 people, you know. Lets check back after December 1st. Is that still the letter day?

All the essays are annoying, that's why I didn't apply to Wake Forest, there are five essays. I just can't stand them anymore! I want to know and get it over with!

I think Dec 1 is the date that letters will be mailed by. However, my mom said that she was reading info about financial aid and there was something that said financial aid forms were sent home the week of Nov. 22 along with acceptance letter. so it could be as soon as this week! I'm scared, lol.

OH MY GOD! I don't want to know....I'm scared too! Once the letter comes it's just too real. I'll have to send out more apps. How did she find out about Nov.22nd? I read online that UVA letters are going out Nov. 24th. So maybe everyone is sending out letters before Thanksgiving. Way to kill the spirit!
