I read somewhere that W&M is notoriously known for grade deflation.

Is this true? How does the difficultly of classes at W&M compare to other comparable schools in the area?

My best friend goes there and she says there is alot of grade deflation. She had a 4.5 in high school and was our valedictorian, and she has a 3.5 now. That may have something to do with her joining a sorority though... I dont know.

WM's intro classes average a 75 . . . but I think if you get beyond that, it gets a little gentler. Because of GERs (our distribution reqs), you may have to take a couple of these--so if you can avoid them by taking classes at your current school or through APs and such, I would recommend it.
Average GPA is 3.0-3.1. I think the deflation comes when you don't work for it, you work less than you used to in high school when compared to college . . .

I didn't find W&M particularly hard my freshman year. The hardest courses I took were history, simply because there was so much reading and information involved. The remainder of my classes (film, economics, computer science) I all found pretty easy. None of my grades were 'deflated' via a curve at all.

The important thing to remember, IMO, at W&M is to go to class. The professers are on the whole fantastic and if you are attentive and go to class, with a little outside studying you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Just my $.02.

W&M is a great school but you have to fight for every fraction of a point. UVA is a better alternative especially if you want to study business or anything else... those were my first two choices, but I am a sellout since I got way more money from a different school.
