Williams College WoW trip

So, I called up to confirm that they received my application—and they hadn’t! Apparently the person I sent it to is on vacation, so they gave me an alternate email.

So, if you haven’t gotten confirmation, it’s worth giving them a call.

I got an e-mail confirmation! Does anyone know how many people are accepted to the program?

Thank you for your interest in Williams College and the Windows on Williams (WOW) program. This year’s WOW applicant pool is the largest and strongest in the program’s history and unfortunately, we cannot accept all of the terrific students who applied. I am sorry that we are unable to include you in this year’s program.

However, please know that this decision is in no way a reflection of how impressed we are by your application. We believe you are a competitive applicant for admission to the Class of 2016 and hope you will decide to apply. Accordingly, I am waiving your application fee—simply type “WOW Fee Waiver” in the Fee Waiver section of the Williams Supplement when you apply. Also, if you are admitted to the Williams class of 2016, you will be a strong candidate for an all-expense-paid visit to campus for our admitted students program in April.

We understand the college application process can be daunting and we want you to know we are here to help. If you would like feedback on your WOW application please do not hesitate to contact me to schedule a time to chat.

I wish you all the best for a wonderful senior year and look forward to reviewing your application this winter.

Sincerely,
Ahmmad Brown

Did all rejected applicants get this email?

I just did. bummer, but oh well.

@abrayo: are you low-income/first-gen? my email talked about how WOW is designed for low-income/first-gen students to experience college life, and since my parents went to college, they didn’t think it’d be as beneficial for me.

at any rate, the letter looked different from yours; the letter definitely didn’t offer me feedback on my WOW app, so i was wondering if you were lower-class/first-gen.

edit: also, did anyone’s email mention their not being a competitive applicant/getting a fee waiver?

Yeah, I got rejected as well. I’m a bit disappointed, but I can’t say I’m not surprised. I guess it had to do with the fact that my yearly household income was around $200,000 and both my parents went to college. Anyways, I think I got the same email as stephenmarkham and for those curious, here it is:

Thank you for your interest in Williams College and the Windows on Williams (WOW) program.

I am writing to let you know that unfortunately, we are unable to include you in this year’s WOW program, but I want to be sure you understand why. WOW is primarily meant to give students from low income and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to visit campus; because we have so many WOW applicants who come from extremely modest circumstances, we feel that it’s important to use our funding to give those students the chance to visit. Please know that our decision is in no way a reflection of how we feel about your application–we think you are a competitive applicant for Williams and hope you still plan to apply.

If you have any questions or I can help in any way now or over the next few months, please do not hesitate to be in touch. I wish you all the best for a wonderful senior year and look forward to reviewing your application this winter.

I’ve already visited Williams plus I live about 2 and 1/2 hours away so an overnight stay would be fine I guess. Now that I think about it, there are a bunch of worthier candidates for WoW. Congrats to all that did get in!

@2ksixteen: did your letter mention anything about a fee waiver?

also: how much do y’all think an offer of a fee waiver is indicative of admissions chances?

no fee waiver – but I never needed or requested one

I just received an acceptance e-mail!

My DS just got his acceptance. We are low-income, but not first gen.

Me too for the fee waiver.

I’m curious, is anyone else applying or has received any other invitations to attend similar weekend programs?

I got the fee waiver too. But normally, my family would be far from qualifying for an application fee waiver. Is the fee waiver added on for candidates they found strong but not first-gen or low-income enough to include in WoW?

@iaahs: that’s exactly my question. that’s what i interpreted the wording to mean…

Hey all! I just got my acceptance email today as well. Congratulations to all those accepted, and commiserations to all those who were not. (But don’t be deterred from applying!)

I know the registration’s not due for a while, but I have a few concerns that maybe align with some other people’s:

I applied to the Amherst Diversity Open House for October 15-17. Williams’ program runs from October 13-15. I wonder if, as the email implies, the two colleges could coordinate and “share expenses”? It seems like the dates are set with that in mind. I’d rather not attend the September date for either, as I have something not related to college to attend that weekend.

Also, there are boxes for Plane, Train, Bus, and Driving. Is there really any reason I would not pick plane? I live in Northern Delaware…so really, all are feasible.

Thirdly, do parents come and stay in a hotel? I’m indifferent as to whether they do or not, but that was a question raised by my mother.

Sorry for the barrage of questions. I’m excited to attend the program and see you all there in the fall!

I don’t think it involves parents but you can ask them directly, I guess. I was thinking the same thing since I also applied to the Amherst open house but just decided to pick separate months. Do you think Amherst would let me change the date from Oct to Sept if they were to accept me? That way I can get to visit both before the list is due for Questbridge.

So excited! Probably going in Oct :D

They said something about me not taking enough classes though D:
Hopefully something good fits in my sched!

Interesting, I wasn’t sure if people actually did get rejected but now I know! I’m sorry to those who did. I was accepted this afternoon and plan to attend the September session! I am low income and first gen.

Sent from my Vortex using CC App

Oh dear, I also applied to Amherst DIVOH and I can’t remember the September dates which are the ones I chose! Does anyone else know?

Sent from my Vortex using CC App

dates for Amherst are September 24-26, 2011, October 15-17, 2011
